Meet Shari Thakar | Film Editor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shari Thakar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shari, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I believe the most important factor behind my success as a video editor and starting my own business is passion. I have always from an early age been passionate about film and story telling. I love telling stories. When I got older and was introduced to the various sectors of filmmaking I realized editing was different type of story telling and you could invoke different emotions in different ways thought imagery and music and I loved it. So, passion, for me, is what keeps me going and loving what I do.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what sets me apart from others has nothing to do with skill and ability in my sector and more of my mindset. A lot of people are talented and creative but they let their thoughts get the best of them. I don’t let my failures or short comings define me, nor do I like to dwell on things for long periods of times. I have had a lot of disappointments throughout my career and moments in which I felt, I wasn’t good enough or I’ll never catch a break and it is very hard to get out of negative headspace, especially when the nature of my work is to be judged and critiqued. Most people will love your work but you will get some that don’t and you need to be okay with that. You do need thick skin and remember not to take things personally.
What I’ve learnt is to be selective with my clients. Do not sign up to a project simply to be paid. You need to like the projects, since you will be working on them sometimes for days, weeks or even months. And you don’t want to be stuck with a client and a project you don’t like. You always need to make sure your client understands you and respects you otherwise you’ll be miserable.
I’m proud of all the work I have done. I was able to work with big companies such as Netflix and Walmart and a few others. I was also given the opportunity to be a lead editor for a feature film that is coming out 2023 that will showcase my editing style and creativeness.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There’s so much to do in LA and yet I’m a homebody so this is a tough question. Firstly, I would take them to Kettle Glazed doughnuts. They have the best doughnuts. I would most likely do silly things which are fun like mini-golfing and stuff like that. Probably a spa day and a beach day (if its summer) I love to go to Eatly myself, so I’d probably drag them there to have dinner and drinks. I would for sure do a road trip to Vegas, I’m not a nightlife person and I don’t gamble but for some reason I love Vegas.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There’s a lot of people that have helped me get to where I am. My editing mentors that I’ve had throughout my journey. My family, supporting my choice in quite a taxing career and simply the people I have met on the way that have given my chance and opportunity big or small.
