We had the good fortune of connecting with Sharon Gomez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sharon, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was me wanting to work for myself and be able to run my business how I wanted to. I loved the idea of being able to make my own schedule, and be my own boss.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Starting a small business isn’t easy. There’s so much people don’t tell you. After graduating Cosmetology school, i was set on starting my business and I knew I needed somewhere to do it at. In school they tell you to go straight to a salon and do commission right after graduating. I decided not to do that. I decided to do booth rental and run my business how I wanted to and make my own hours with the expense of paying rent on a room. I was very nervous that I wouldn’t be able to pay for the room because I didn’t have enough clients. So starting out I ran a lot of deals, discounts and did a lot of giveaways to get my name out there and get clients in. This helped build my clientele soo much. At this time I was also working part time at my other job coaching gymnastics. I knew I needed to keep this job to have it as a fall back on if my business didn’t workout. Thankfully it did. I was able to build my business up and my clientele enough that I was able to quit my part time job and focus on my business. All my hard work was paying off that I was having over 8 clients everyday. Now, I do lash trainings and I tell all of my students to never give up. To keep working hard and that it will take time but they will be successful too.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite places in my city is any food places! I love trying new things and eating new foods. My favorite restaurant is Chedda Burger in Salt Lake City. They have the best burgers and cheddar filled tator tots. I’m also a big fan of crime and paranormal things so I love going to haunted places and places where Ted bundy hung out. One of my favorite relaxing places to go to is Antelope Island! The views are incredible. It’s kind of like Utahs “beach”. You can go on drives there , blast music and enjoy the views.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I think my parents definitely deserve some recognition in my story. They helped me get to where I am today. My parent’s support and encouragement to be my own boss and start my own business was a big factor in me believing in myself enough to start.
