We had the good fortune of connecting with Sha’Ron Taft and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sha’Ron, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I sought out to start Precision Hair Company I had no idea how complicated the process would be. All I knew was that alot of my hair clients were having bad reactions to the toxins that are in Kanekalon braiding hair and I wanted to do something about it. I wanted African American women to be able to get braids installed without the burden of having scalp irritation, sores or even the slightest itching that many of us have become so accustomed to.
I know so many women who thought that an “itchy scalp” was part of the normal braiding process and I wanted them all to know that IT IS NOT!
I wanted other braiders to have an alternative to the braiding hair that is being widely distributed to us yet, it is full of carcinogens. I don’t think anyone should be sold products full of toxic chemicals, when all they want is to feel pretty.

What should our readers know about your business?
Precision Hair Company is a synthetic braiding hair company that provides non toxic, chemical free braiding hair. There are many brands of mainstream braiding hair but none that offer a chemical free option. Also, being an African American woman who manufactured a brand of braiding hair, in an Asian filled industry, is not very common at all.
Because of this dynamic it was extremely difficult for me to find a manufacture who was willing to work with me on my terms. Most weren’t willing to given me any creative options at all. Just private label options that I was not at all interested in.
I waited on God to direct me. I even took a “break” for months because I got so discouraged. But seeing my clients suffer brought me right back to the idea and that’s when I landed a manufacturer.
I had no clue how much was to come after developing the actual brand. That was just the start of it all.(lol) This was at the beginning of the Pandemic, so I had extra time on my hands to take care of all of the legal aspects of starting a business. I did it all by myself without an ounce of hired help! And boy o’ boy what a tedious job it was.
Being so hands on throughout the entire process has taught me that there is always an answer to everything unknown, we just have to be diligent in finding the answers. I think this is what sets leaders and bosses aside from everyone else, their perseverance.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, being that I’m older now I don’t hang out much anymore so I don’t have too many specific places. (lol) But growing up in the greater Los Angeles area, there’s always something to do. We have all of the beaches and their boardwalks/piers like Venice Beach and Santa Monica. I love Amusement parks and tend to get season passes to everything so those are my go to’s for fun with my family.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to thank my cousin Kendra for being one of my 4 test subjects for 4 long months. As a person who suffers from “itchy scalp” to all brands of hair, she allowed me to test out each and every sample until I formulated the perfect braiding hair! I’m sure getting her hair braided was a plus (lol) but she gave me free reign over her hair not knowing if the samples would cause more irritation or not. So Kendra, this ones for you, ” YOU’RE THE REAL MVP.”
