We had the good fortune of connecting with Shelley Johnson II and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shelley, what inspires you?

I find inspiration in a multitude of things, and it truly ignites my creative spirit. As an artist, I see myself as a conduit for something greater, a vessel of the divine. From the vibrant hues of a painting to the intricate textures of the world around me, every element catalyzes my imagination. Even the melody of a song or the symphony of nature’s sounds can stir something deep within me.

But one of the most extraordinary sources of inspiration for me lies in the nostalgic memories of my childhood. I firmly believe in the power of embracing our inner child, and for me, it’s a constant reminder of the unfiltered joy and curiosity that resides within. There’s a quote that says, “Happiness is seeing the world through the eyes of children,” and it resonates deeply with me.

Rather than simply longing for inspiration, I actively seek to manifest my creative desires. Brainstorming has become somewhat of a delightful obsession for me – I jokingly refer to it as one of my “kinks.” Whether it’s bouncing ideas off myself or engaging in collaborative sessions with others, the magic of inspiration can materialize in unexpected forms as long as you’re fully present and receptive.

Throughout introspective moments and quality time spent with myself, I often discover that my personal memories hold an incredible wellspring of inspiration. But it’s not just the inspiration itself that captivates me – it’s the thrilling sensation of stumbling upon something new, something that sparks a sense of wonder within me. Opening myself up to the present moment allows me to feel truly inspired, and it’s an enthralling experience.

So, you see, my pursuit of inspiration goes beyond a mere longing. It’s a conscious effort to live in the moment, to observe the world with fresh eyes, and to embrace the limitless wonders that creativity has to offer.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

Thank you for the opportunity to connect with you and the community. I am truly grateful for your support. Rather than confining myself to a specific label, I consider myself a polymath or a renaissance man. My journey has been nothing short of exciting, and I’d love to share some highlights.

I am a proud, inducted member of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars. As a curator and researcher, I had the honor of working on art exhibits such as “Bronzeville: Modernity, Race, and the Search to Belong.” This collaboration between Casa 0101 Theater/Art Gallery and The Japanese American Museum was an incredible experience. I am eternally thankful to Jimmy Centeno and the artists for the opportunity. Additionally, I serve as the Creative Director for the Afrofuturism anime studio and streetwear brand, The Dojo District | Anime House. At Anime House, I have designed three capsule collections and curated a home collection featuring teas and candles. I also had the pleasure of collaborating with amazing composers and artists such as Kelvin Lewis aka AmGn and Joe Kidd aka Hussleman on the musical production of “Atomic Valor: The Floating Koto Original Score.”

One of my proudest achievements is directing the short film “Atomic Valor: The Floating Koto” under The Dojo District brand and Carmine Shaw for Acid Bones Studios. The film has received recognition, winning “Best Animated Short Film” at esteemed festivals like The Dreamz Catcher International Film Festival, The L.A Neo Noir Film & Script Festival, and The Distribution Festival. I even had the opportunity to speak on a panel at The San Diego Comic-Con with The Dojo District.

But creativity knows no boundaries. Besides my passion for film, I’ve dived into the world of fashion. Recently, I had the pleasure of walking in a Piece Unik fashion show/auction, showcasing the incredible designs of Zhorzh Simeonov from Sofia, Bulgaria, and his brand Ethereal Regalia. Being near the runway is like a second home to me, and I enjoy attending fashion shows, and constantly seeking inspiration.

The last few years have been a journey of self-discovery, breaking free from the confines I had placed upon myself. Embracing my creative expression has been the catalyst for my growth. Looking ahead, I am excited to delve deeper into art curation, film projects, and the fashion world, with a strong focus on sustainability, upcycling, and uncovering hidden talents.

Another exciting prospect on my horizon is collaborating with Anthony Markus, the inspiring founder and CEO of Leap & Bound Studios. Our partnership will undoubtedly lead to remarkable creative endeavors.

Thank you again for your support, and I’m thrilled to share my passion and vision with the world.

Do you have a favorite quote or affirmation? What does it mean to you/What do you like about it?

When reflecting on the tapestry of quotes that have woven through my mind, one quote in particular effortlessly captures the essence of my life’s journey. It’s the conclusion of William Ernest Henley’s poem, Invictus: “I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.” These powerful lines serve as a constant reminder to stay present in the moment, a priceless gift in itself. They encapsulate the profound truth that my life begins and ends with me, a testament to the principle of cause and effect.

I deeply believe in taking ownership of my actions, fully conscious that they have the power to attract positivity or negativity. This perspective empowers me to recognize that I am separate from my thoughts; I am the observer, the captain of this ship, entrusted with the duty to navigate it with intention. It is through this belief that I uncover the true essence of my journey, charting my course toward a fulfilling and purposeful life.

Work-life balance: how has your balance changed over time? How do you think about that balance?

Throughout my journey, I’ve had a significant shift in my perspective on work-life balance. In the past, my view was somewhat distorted. I found myself devoting eight out of my twelve waking hours to my corporate career, leaving little time for anything else. I even squeezed in classes and tried to fit in a few moments for my hobbies. It was during this time that I realized the concept of work-life balance seemed like a myth because I was pouring all of my time into organizations that didn’t reciprocate the same investment in me.

However, as I reclaimed my time and took back my power, I made a conscious decision to redirect my energy towards more fulfilling projects and impactful collaborations. I’ve come to appreciate the importance of stepping away from projects and even allowing myself to experience moments of boredom. Strangely enough, there’s a thrill in completing a project that fuels my excitement. Nonetheless, I’ve also learned the vital lesson that burning the candle at both ends doesn’t serve me or anyone else well. Rest, I’ve discovered, is an integral part of the process.

Admittedly, I am still a work in progress. However, I make a conscious effort to establish healthy boundaries with myself and cultivate habits that support my overall well-being. It’s an ongoing journey, but one that I believe is worth embarking on for a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Risk Taking: How do you think about risk, what role has taking risks played in your life/career?

Risk is an integral part of the journey we call life. It is through facing these risks head-on that we can truly discover who we are and what we’re capable of. When it comes to both my personal and professional endeavors, I have eagerly embraced the unknown. Many times, I found myself occupying roles that were entirely new to me. But instead of shying away from these challenges, I embraced them with a deep-rooted belief in my abilities and an arsenal of life experiences that had prepared me for the task at hand.

By taking calculated risks, I not only experienced personal growth but also tapped into my natural talents. No longer did I force myself into situations that didn’t align with who I truly was. Instead, I allowed my authentic self to flourish, embracing my strengths and desires. I am acutely aware that life isn’t always smooth sailing. It ebbs and flows in unexpected ways. So, I have learned to be like water—flexible, adaptable, and equipped with the mental fortitude needed to navigate the twists and turns that lie ahead.

Courageously pursuing my goals and nurturing my sense of adventure has always been my modus operandi.

However, it was the pivotal moment when I chose to wholeheartedly trust and believe in myself which stands as the pinnacle of risk-taking for me. This decision required me to step outside of my comfort zone, facing an undeniable sense of discomfort. But it is within this discomfort that life’s true essence resides. Complacency comes with comfort, while growth and self-discovery emerge from daring to be uncomfortable.

Throughout my journey, I have learned invaluable lessons about my character through taking risks. It is in those defining moments that I have gained invaluable perspective, shaping me into the person I am today. And so, I continue to boldly embrace the unknown, knowing that it is through these risks that life truly unfolds its greatest wonders.

What’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?

Life is an intricate tapestry of challenging decisions, and one particular choice stands out in my mind. It involved turning down what seemed like the pinnacle of success – my so-called “Dream Job” at the time. However, the deeper I delved into introspection, I realized that my true aspirations extended far beyond merely working to accumulate material possessions. There was a profound paradox that loomed before me, as accepting the role would bind me to strings that compromised the very essence of my soul.

As daunting as it was, I chose to walk away from that ideal position in the new organization. Subsequently, I even departed from my previous employer, breaking free from the confines of comfort. This posed a tremendous challenge since I was offered more comfort, tempting me to remain stagnant. Nevertheless, I knew that embracing such comfort would only distance me further from my authentic self.

This pivotal decision demanded an unwavering trust in myself. I willingly plunged into the fiery depths of uncertainty, feeling as if I were in freefall. It was during those moments of ambiguity that I truly discovered the depths of my character – my indomitable will of fire. I had to become my own greatest ally, forging a profound friendship with myself, for I was the sole dependable force I could rely on.

Although I had the opportunity to choose comfort, I realized that the easy path seldom leads to growth. My relentless pursuit of authenticity required me to step outside the boundaries of my comfort zone because that is precisely where life truly begins. By demonstrating to myself what is possible, I offer a glimpse of endless possibilities to others as well. And now, here I stand, eager to share my journey and empower others to embrace their own paths of self-discovery.

What is the most important factor behind your success/the success of your brand?

I firmly believe that self-discipline and mental fortitude are the driving forces behind my success. It takes a willingness to constantly learn and approach each opportunity with a beginner’s mindset. I admit that there are many tempting distractions in this world, including the allure of procrastination. However, whether helping to establish brands or working on personal projects, I understand that everything begins and ends with my level of effort and engagement.

One of the key lessons I’ve learned is the importance of time management and holding myself accountable to realistic goals. These habits have transformed my life for the better. While I can’t deny the challenges I’ve faced as a black man in America, including systemic racism and bias, I firmly believe that my mind is my sharpest tool in overcoming any obstacle.

I am grateful for the trials I’ve experienced because, within each mistake, there is a valuable lesson. They have shaped me into the person I am today. I truly believe that life itself is the most significant work of art we can create.

Throughout my life and professional career, I have often found myself in unfamiliar roles. Yet, I approach these situations with self-awareness, recognizing both my strengths and weaknesses. Rather than letting perfectionism hold me back, I view my weaknesses as opportunities for growth. By holding myself accountable in all areas of life, especially within myself, I am constantly propelled toward my goals.

Ultimately, I consider myself a student of life, always seeking knowledge and understanding; unlearning and learning. The more I learn, the less fear I have. It’s this mentality that keeps me motivated and ready to take on any challenge that comes my way.

What do you want your legacy to be? What do you want people to remember about you?

For me, leaving a legacy worth leaving isn’t just a shallow aspiration – it’s a burning desire that fuels every step I take. I envision myself as a servant leader, embodying the ideals of vision and action. It pushes me beyond my limits, refusing to settle for mediocrity, and inspiring those around me to do the same.

Being aware of the influence I have on others, particularly my nieces and nephew, is a responsibility I hold dear. I strive to be a positive influence in their lives, sharing the knowledge I’ve gained through my own experiences. It’s a way of pouring into them, with the understanding that one generation plants the seeds, and the next enjoys the shade. But I don’t stop there. I consider the impact I can have on future generations, ones that haven’t even been born yet.

Socioeconomic and generational change are the core of my aspirations. I envision a future where my family and community thrive with generational wealth and well-being. This drives me to channel my actions and achievements into establishing organizations and schools that guide young minds toward becoming the best versions of themselves, both mentally and spiritually.

I firmly believe that by cultivating the minds of our youth, by nurturing their independence and critical thinking skills, we can effectively build a better, more inclusive society. When we strive to surpass our current selves, everything around us gets better too. It’s not just about personal growth; it’s about leaving the world a better place than when I entered it.

So, when I say that leaving a legacy worth leaving is paramount to me, it’s not just a hollow statement. It’s a mission that drives my every action, my every decision. I am determined to inspire and uplift others, to empower generations to come, and to contribute to a world that thrives on collective progress.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love, and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

Ah, where do I begin? My journey has been a mosaic, constructed with the love, advice, and mentorship of individuals whose influence on my life has been significant and positive. At the heart of my journey is my mother, who at every step has taught me how love should be given and received. She has shown me through her life, the depth of the golden rule: treating others as we desire to be treated. Her unconditional love breathes in me, and this gratitude I feel towards her is as deep as the roots of an old tree.

Much the same is the love and support of my family, who stand as rock-solid supporters. Seeing their smiling faces at my project events are some of my most cherished memories. Then, there’s Jimmy Centeno, a savant curator, artist, and curatorial mentor. His invaluable advice, peerless knowledge, and willingness to engage have been a North Star, guiding me through a sea of ideas.

An applause of thanks to my business partner and friend, Kelvin Lewis, and his family, for enabling me to blossom into a creative director. Thank you to the Huff family, and Erika Lewis and the Lewis family for their unconditional support. Standing tall in my life’s gallery of influencers is John Simmons, ASC, a kindred spirit in the art world, representing a spectrum of possibilities. Then the Atkins family, especially Kai & Cynthia Atkins with their warmth since my childhood, who have been tokens of unconditional love that I cherish.

There’s also the fantastic duo, Lindsey G. and her brilliant daughter Chloe. They have been beacons of joy, lending emotional support through every twist and turn of my creative journey.

TJ Walker and the Black Design Collective, and Jennifer Austin, one of the leading stylists of the fashion world, demand my utmost respect and gratitude. Jennifer’s resilient spirit and willingness to share her inspiring journey is truly a power source for aspiring creators like me.

Given the blessing of sharing space with an assembly of young, brilliant artisans has also been an incredible experience. Diego Aureggi – The Karpenter & Piece Unik, Sumedhaa Kothari- by.sume, Brya Nicole, Carmela Segal- Segalmade, JC, Off The Handle, Shakur Forrest aka Painlessness-SOS Studios, with Yohan Ettienne for NowCompare, Chris Black aka SowwyCeo, Justin Mensinger, and Nino Cutraro- De Florencio with their artistic mastery – each one of these talented individuals injects a potent dose of creative inspiration. Thank you to my Designer Dinner Collective family.

I’d also like to highlight the founder of Tints Streetwear, Simmi Sen. A brilliant, young designer whose early strides in sustainable fashion mark the dawn of an exciting future. And not to forget, June Kim aka June Redthread, a prodigious 3D and AI artist whose digital universes never fail to astonish me with their depth and creativity.

To everyone who’s been a part of my journey, whether they realize the magnitude of their positive impact or not, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude. You are my ‘gifts of now’ and acknowledging you serves as my way of ‘giving flowers in real time’. Thank you!
