Meet Shelly Gilad | Food Blogger, Content Creator & Illustrator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shelly Gilad and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shelly, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
By sharing humble and simple, plant-forward recipes, I inspire my audience and readers to cook and eat more at home. My philosophy is that our well-being depends not only on what we eat, but also how much we eat and where we eat. I believe that the act of cooking is very important for mental health. Home cooked meals make us feel nourished, cared for, and self sufficient. Meals that include different kind of vegetables, fragrant herbs, and nuts make meals more vibrant and exciting.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Let’s start with the fact that I am an omnipotentialite – someone who has a broad range of interests and creative pursuits. I can’t do or be just one thing. I started my career as a graphic designer, but after having my boys, my kitchen – wherever it was (we are digital nomads) – became my studio. Being a food blogger, recipe developer, content creator, and illustrator gives me the possibility to move fluidly from one creative endeavor to another. For years I thought having so many skills was a curse, but now I am very grateful to possess them. I have learned over the years to combine my talents and passions, as if they were ingredients in a recipe. During the day I may cook, film myself cooking, take pictures, edit the video, write a blog post, and develop and sketch recipe ideas. The order changes day to day, and that constant variation keeps things fresh and less mundane.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Start the day with an invigorating walk through the lush trails of Griffith Park. Afterwards, head to Trail Cafe to fuel up on a steaming chai latte and fresh blueberry scone.
Around mid-morning, make your way to LACMA to spend a couple hours immersed in the museum’s impressive collections and exhibits. Wander through the galleries and let the art spark your imagination.
Next, drive over to Koreatown for an authentic Korean lunch at Hanum Restaurant. Savor their home-style panjans, cabbage soup and seafood omelet. After, take some time to explore Koreatown’s lively streets and shops. Stop by Sunrite for a refreshing boba milk.
In the late afternoon, cruise over to Silver Lake. Check out the indie boutiques and cafes around Sunset Junction. At Pine & Crane, nibble on homemade Chinese steamed buns and slurp up a bowl of savory dan dan noodles.
Cap off the day at the Vista Theatre to catch a classic or indie film screening in one of LA’s coolest retro theaters. Grab your tickets and snacks and settle in for a night at the movies.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my mentor, Karen Kaplan, cookbook author and writer.
