We had the good fortune of connecting with Shon Swett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shon, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I see risk as a balance of freedom and chaos. It can be both terrifying and liberating. I took the risk to move to Los Angeles three years ago without knowing anyone or anything about the area. This move changed my life and accelerated my network and career in the cycling industry. I was exposed to so much both good and bad and experienced things I would have never had without taking that risk.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My two favorite mediums to work with are Photography and Painting. I started studying Art later than most and took my first art class as a junior in college. This gave me a lot of innocence and open-mindedness to explore and create. I was a sponge and considered everything in my approach. It was challenging. At first, I didn’t believe people could learn to draw and thought it was just a natural gift. I am most proud of the fact that I have made art for myself and not given much thought to what others would think. I make art because I enjoy it. I’ve learned that when you try to force a piece into a puzzle that wasn’t meant to be, it is not that particular piece’s fault but is a valuable lesson in timing and placement.
I am a product of a hardworking and loving family.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Within the first few days, we would visit a museum. I enjoy the Getty Museum, The Broad, and LACMA. If that friend is interested in cars then definitely, The Petersen Museum.
My favorite landmarks in Los Angeles are the Griffith Park Observatory, Santa Monica Pier, and the Palos Verdes Cliffs.
LA is definitely home to some of the best coffee shops. My go-to would be Alana’s, and Sachi. Kumquat, if I’m on the East Side.
Saving the best for last. For food, there are a lot of options. too many options. Grand Central Market is a great place to visit but my local favorites are
Trophies Burger
Mogu Mogu
Heavy Handed
Any restaurant in K-Town.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to my family that continues to show support and encouragement from across the country in Charleston, SC, and here in Los Angeles my partner who shows unwavering support and love for me.
I want to shout out The Creative Act by Rick Rubin. It reminds me that even in the days we are not physically creating art, we are making art in the way we live our lives.
