Meet Shreya Shethia | Filmmaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shreya Shethia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shreya, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I am inspired by a lot of things. It depends on where I am and what is happening. It feels like magic at times, like I am walking and thinking about a problem and how can I solve it and then suddenly a song starts playing, or I overhear a conversation or some a picture, which somehow answers the dilemma I am in. So sometimes it’s just in the moment that things seem to inspire me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
So I see a lot of people who know what they want to do in life very early on. But that wasn’t me. I never had any idea what work would make me happy and what truly burns my passionate side. I thought I wanted to study event management, but I did Business Management for my bachelor’s. Still floating through life and trying on various other things – like Floral decoration and Graphic designing, I stumbled upon photography suddenly on a family vacation to Rajasthan India. Rajasthan is filled with beautiful architecture and historical palaces. And all of a sudden I started getting the urge to click pictures of the place, which I didn’t have before. The pictures were surprisingly good and approved by my very critical sibling which made me really feel proud of myself for the first time.
Slowly photography turned into videography and filmmaking. I wanted to learn everything there is to learn about movies – It started with the cinematography aspect of films and then it went to writing, directing and production.
I wanted to learn everything there is to learn about films and filmmaking.
Then I came to LA to study for my Master’s in filmmaking and I could see how passionate I was about this world. I wanted to learn everything, I wanted to participate and do everything.
On set you would see me doing and trying to get into all departments, which I learned isn’t considered to be a very good quality, but I still tried – Respectfully.
So now I feel like I am finally doing the work I am truly passionate about.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take to all the outdoorsy spots. All the various hiking trails and beaches there are to see. Any beautiful green national parks with starry nights and the possibility to see animals.
I am not so keen on going out to eat and drink, but I would definitely take them to the Grove to eat and hang out and also visit Barnes and Noble which is so huge and beautiful.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I believe that we should always keep learning, no matter where we are, what we are doing with our lives, or how old we are. Learning opens up your mind and in turn, opens you up to new possibilities moving forward. A lot of people inspire me to be great, anyone who I see is so good at what they do but also remains humble and down to earth. Treats other people well, not because they want something in return but because they are genuinely trying to be a better human. I got an amazing opportunity to study and work with one such individual who I look up to. Her name is Jennifer Marie and she is such an incredible human, that when I am with her I feel like I am constantly becoming better myself. I am truly grateful for this encounter I had with her.
Other than that any books, movies or organizations that represent love in any capacity or manner inspire me. I think if people start moving forward with more love in their lives we all would be in a much better situation. What else can I say – I love LOVE!
