We had the good fortune of connecting with Shuohui Zeng and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shuohui, what do you attribute your success to?
Observing the design in everyday life, from the signs of Brooklyn shops to the fonts in second-hand books found in Los Angeles bookstores, provides endless inspiration.
This kind of observation fuels my passion for creating typefaces, graphic objects. And it shapes my work.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My practice is deeply rooted in a passion for the intricacies of lettering and the expressive potential of typography.
My fascination with the art of black and white drives me to type design, this pursuit is more than aesthetic—it is a quest for harmony.
My interested in the reciprocal relationship between letters’ forms and counterforms, and it guides my approach: aiming to create typefaces that are not only visually experimental, but also highly readable in everyday applications.
Each of my project is a problem solving process, I’m passionate about addressing visual challenges, as I believ that each problem is an opportunity to uncover a fascinating solution. For me, this is the essence of “experimental design.”
I maintain a certain conservatism in my work, preferring subtlety over flamboyance. My creations often aim to be quietly impactful, rather than overtly attention-seeking.
Designing type for me has become more than a profession—it is a daily practice, a discipline, and, most significantly, a playground for creative experimentation.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
LA chinatown, it’s a wonderful place to find interesting latin & chinese typeface.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Thanks to my teachers at MICA and Type@Cooper, their endless support and guidance have allowed me to refine my skills and deepen my love of design and life.
