We had the good fortune of connecting with Sia “Savvy” Stewart-Massey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sia “Savvy”, why did you pursue a creative career?
I started my career in the corporate sector as an accountant and eventually moved into project management. As effective as I was in the corporate world, the call from my creative side was persistent and grew increasingly insistent! Eventually I took the leap into television production due to my passion for storytelling and this has allowed me to give a voice to marginalized groups that are often muted. I take pride in championing the rights of women and providing them with platforms that allow them to bravely display their most authentic selves.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a woman of color, I understand all too well the importance of representation and controlling the narrative. I strive to ensure our stories are told without the unnecessary burden of harmful stereotypes and caricatures. I started my career producing true crime stories and although I wanted to ensure I presented a compelling finished product, I also wanted to ensure I did so with compassion for the victims and family members. There were times I had to provide cultural context for some of the stories I produced and I’ve been blessed to be a part of teams who wanted to understand the unique experiences of the people we were covering. There were a few difficult hurdles to overcome, but I’ve found that people tend to listen when they know you’re coming from a sincere place of love and compassion for others. I’ve learned the power of inclusion from everyone on the team. Great ideas aren’t limited to people with titles or positions. Sometimes the person holding the key to success isn’t in the room, so I make sure my whole team is always present and their perspectives are respected. I want the world to know that Savvy Media Group is committed to keeping the art of storytelling authentic and inclusive.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So, my closest friends know that I don’t start any weekend without brunch! Although I’m a recent transplant to Los Angeles, there are a two brunch spots I would recommend. The Coffee Company in Westchester and 1010 Wine in Inglewood. From there, it’s probably off to The Grove for a little shopping and The Broad for a bit of culture. We’d probably end the night with dinner and drinks at The District. My idea of fun isn’t limited to a place or an event, but the opportunity to truly enjoy the people that I’m hanging out with, wherever we may end up.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Although there are a litany of people that I could shout out, I think I want to focus on two of my biggest fans and supporters – my mother and my husband. My mother, Dr. Nef Stewart gave me the greatest and most lasting gift any mother can give her daughter – the boldness to audaciously believe that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to. At a very young age, she offered me a voice and encouraged me to speak up for myself and for others who were not able to. She taught me to be a critical but free thinker and to question everything! She showed me that it is never too late to reinvent myself, whenever the need arises.

My husband is truly a one-man support system. His encouragement and positivity is the fuel that drives every endeavor I dare to take on. He’s more than a hype man, he offers honest and thoughtful feedback that has allow me to grow as a creative.
