We had the good fortune of connecting with Sienna Armstrong and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sienna, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I am a firm believer that some people can’t make it as employers, some can’t be employees, and some can’t be self-employed. I fit into the camp of just never feeling like I could work for another person without holding the reins. Being self-employed isn’t for everyone, but it works for me, the way my mind works, and my lifestyle.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Speaking from a standpoint of a photographer, I feel honored to be able to incorporate my artistry into a full-fledged JOB. Being able to tell a story through an artistic lens and have that creative freedom and trust from my clients is so fulfilling to me. It hasn’t always been easy — I historically have undervalued myself and started off taking extremely low-paying work, but now I am fortunate enough to have couples book with me because my approach resonates with them. Outside of being an elopement photographer, I write poetry and also make music in a darkwave duo with my ex-husband and dear friend, Josh.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I know Missing Persons popularized the statement “nobody walks in LA”, but I definitely do. In fact, I think that is one of the most fun ways to explore the city and get a feel for the area. Taking things at a slower pace and being able to really incorporate yourself into all of the little neighborhoods that make up Los Angeles is truly something special. I love to show others around my neighborhood of Silver Lake and Echo Park: of course, the Echo Park swan boats are a must. Little street fairs and farmers markets are super fun to explore, and I have a laundry list of vegan restaurants scattered all over the city to visit. The art museums around town are unbeatable, and ending the day with a sunset view of downtown from Angels Point in Elysian Park is just so deliciously LA.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am forever thankful for my friends + family who are down to take a look at my work, give me feedback, or just offer support with encouraging words. My partner Christopher is super supportive when it comes to ensuring I prioritize my creative outlets.
