We had the good fortune of connecting with Sierra Upshaw and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sierra, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
The entertainment industry does not prioritize artistry. Money is the focus. Those with a “marketable look” are sought after over those with genuine talent. Overused themes/storylines are repeated because the powers that be believe if it worked before it’ll be profitable again. Capitalism and other agendas are the foundation of this industry, period. Authenticity is only way I’ll be able to connect with my people and sustain the career of my dreams. I’m too real for tv but that doesn’t mean I don’t belong on screen. Media is changing; the last shall be first. Real life is happening so only real art can reflect that. People need to see pure creation and true talent. It’s time for art to have its place as the powerful force that it is. My redetermination is supporting me to make a path for myself and others like me. I’m ready.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My focus is on creating the 2023 astrology calendar for szn Il of our astrology brand Above/Below. We are currently welcoming funding for our calendar and short film. Also, I work as an agent/manager with 216 Talent Agency. We represent the rawest creatives and l’m excited to see where this journey takes my talents on and off screen. I’m ready to act on stages and create content that’s next level.  Overall I’m designing a career filled with passion and authenticity. I don’t care about what anything looks like. If I’m not having fun, I’m not doing it.  Staying committed to my personal development and faith/trust in God has supported me to this moment. Life is easy for no one, regardless of what it seems like. Maintaining my spiritual practices empowers me to overcome every challenge. Overtime I’ve learned that the saying is true; “It doesn’t get easier. You just get better”. May the world know that my heart is pure and my intentions are true. When I say I want freedom for all, I mean it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my loved one was coming to town I’d show them the best time possible. We’d go to Manhattan Beach for sure. It’s not super crowed and the water is so pretty. Mardi Gras Tuesday would see us a few times that week since their New Orleans style food is super bomb and I love the energy there. Highly recommend! Lymphatic massages at the Body Roll Studio are a must. I recently had one and I’m already looking forward to my next session, very relaxing. We’d shop the vintage stores on Ventura. American Vintage takes all my money. I have a few pieces on hold as we speak. We’re guaranteed to find something there. A pole class at Studio 216 would be super fun! The instructors are really gifted and we’d have a great time. Before their trip was over we would definitely go to a SEE YOU SOON party. Those are the best parties in LA. Actual fun, great DJs and people are really dancing! Perfect way to end the week.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to all my teachers, directors and mentors that have guided me on my artistic journey. From Cleveland School of the Arts to Coppin State University to Wombwork Productions and everyone in between. Thank you for everything.
