We had the good fortune of connecting with Silvia Cantu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Silvia, is there something you believe many others might not?
I don’t agree with people that think “You should just focus on one thing”. I don’t think you necessarily have to define your area of work that strictly. I’m an Art Director, but I also find myself producing shoots, working on graphic design and illustrations. The most important thing to me, as an artist, is to find your vision, your style. That should be the focus! Creativity can be expressed in so many ways, and people can be multi-talented. I feel like, for some people, being confined in a specific area or defined by just one specific skill might be diminishing and interfere with creative expression.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m an Art Director, and I’ve been working in the fashion and beauty industry for more than eight years. I was born and raised in Milan, so my life has always been full of beauty and inspiration. I had the chance to grow my skill in a country that offers limitless inspiration and a great combination of art, culture, and intellect. After a few years in the industry, I started posting my work online. Somehow a few overseas brands had noticed me, and I finally moved to LA. The biggest challenge for me was to adapt to an entirely new culture and such a different job market. That’s how I learned that the most important superpower for a person who works in the creative industry is the ability to adapt. To a new city, a new job position, a new trend, a new media. Adapting your skills and abilities is vital, but it’s also important to do that without losing sight of your creative vision and values.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d definitely want to spend time in Malibu. I love Matador beach; it’s such an inspiring place, especially early in the morning, before it gets busy. There’s something about the ocean and being at the beach that instantly clears my mind and makes me feel calmer. It just aligns my thoughts. After that, I would spend the rest of the day eating. I love taco trucks, as long as they have a vegan option! I don’t need anything more than the beach and food. I also would love to spend some time at the LACMA. They have the best exhibitions and it’s the best place to recharge your creativity if you feel you’re losing inspiration.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would dedicate my shoutout to all the people that made me feel welcomed when I moved to LA. I wouldn’t be the creative and professional that I am today without their love and support. And my husband Sam for following me in this crazy adventure because he believed in my dreams.
