We had the good fortune of connecting with Sirui Li and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sirui, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I am drawn to creative work because the effort of pushing my thinking to its limits always brings surprises into my life. To maintain a creative mindset, it’s crucial to break free from my own limitations, continuously learn, and understand knowledge from different fields, including the latest in science and technology. I enjoy exploring new areas; interdisciplinary collaboration and learning broaden my perspective and enable me as a designer to constantly improve myself. This is what I believe convinces me to pursue a career in the creative arts industry.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What I take the most pride in is my attitude. I am a designer who thrives on challenges and does not limit myself to any specific field or design style. Whether it’s interaction design or landscape design, I always aim to achieve excellence, ensuring all my design works reach a high standard. Naturally, to overcome these challenges, I need to enhance my skills and broaden my knowledge, a process that can be long and tedious. Yet, my passion and determination have helped me surmount many hurdles. The market and industry might see fluctuations, and recognition is not always consistent. However, my commitment to continuous learning and facing challenges head-on are the reasons I’ve been able to navigate through difficulties in my career. I firmly believe in the power of perseverance, exemplified by my dedication to practicing illustration for ten hours a day and researching different types of paints and papers. While many skills may not visibly contribute to my professional life or business immediately, they form the foundation of my approach to future challenges.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I reside in the Fort Lauderdale-Miami area of South Florida, where sunshine and the sea are the most distinctive features of the region. Miami is also renowned as a design hub, hosting numerous exhibitions for designers from around the world every year. Moreover, due to its geographical proximity to the Caribbean, a wide variety of Latin American cuisines and cultures are accessible here. Whether it’s Mexican tacos or Cuban beef stew, they’re sure to leave a lasting impression.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
As an enthusiast of architectural design, Tadao Ando, a master of architecture, has been my greatest source of encouragement and influence. Transitioning from a boxer to an internationally renowned architect, the difficulties and challenges he faced are beyond my imagination. His journey also serves as a vital encouragement for me not to fear cross-disciplinary design. Different designs may have different principles, logics, or presentation methods, but what matters most for a designer is attitude—the courage and perseverance to face challenges.
