We had the good fortune of connecting with Sklaerenn Lorand and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sklaerenn, what do you attribute your success to?
The key factors behind my career and the recognition I’ve received are my rigor, determination, and perseverance — combined with a touch of boldness.
I’ve always believed that giving up should never be an option, even when facing obstacles or ill-intentioned people. “Never Give Up” is my motto, and that mindset has allowed me to build my career in the United States, to follow People Convention as they expanded into a new market, and to assert myself in a highly competitive industry while staying true to my artistic vision.
Adaptability, empathy, sensitivity, and sincerity are also at the heart of my work.
Working on film sets, concerts, or conventions requires blending into the environment, remaining discreet, while still capturing the key moments that make a difference. This ability to stay in the background yet deliver powerful, emotionally resonant images has earned me the trust of both professionals and artists, who know they can rely on me to capture authentic, meaningful moments.
I’m also a perfectionist. I never do things halfway.
Every decision I make on set, framing, lighting, timing, or selecting which moments to highlight, is driven by attention to detail and respect for the expectations of the artists and participants. Even when I can’t control everything, I make sure every image has maximum impact, tells a story, and reflects the emotion of the moment.
These qualities explain why People Convention has entrusted me with growing responsibilities over the years and why I’m considered a key member of their team.
They also explain why so many actors, musicians, and artists remember me for the right reasons: discretion, professionalism, and consistency in quality. My unique approach and commitment to excellence have allowed me to build strong, lasting relationships in the entertainment industry while contributing to major events and large-scale projects in both France and the United States.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Photography has been a part of my life for over twenty years. As far back as I can remember, I have always loved capturing images and, paradoxically, I have always disliked being in front of the camera. I truly began my photography journey during my teenage years, documenting musical theater productions, plays, and concerts in Paris. It was there that I realized how a single photo could preserve an emotion and freeze a memory. I always aimed to capture the most beautiful shot, one that would immortalize a unique moment.
At that time, I was fortunate to meet several French artists who believed in me and encouraged me to turn my passion into a real career. Very young, I had the incredible opportunity to go on tour with musical shows while still in high school. I loved photographing the performances, but even more, I loved capturing the behind-the-scenes moments, the backstage world. These authentic moments, away from the spotlight, always fascinated me. This close proximity to the artists and production teams gave me the feeling of being an integral part of the adventure.
This curiosity later led me to join Icart Photography School in Paris to refine my technical and artistic skills. Over the years, I had the chance to collaborate with French talents such as Christophe Maé, Cécilia Cara, David Ban, Louis Delort, and many others, as well as directors like Julien Seri and Adam Phénix on various creative projects.
Becoming the official photographer for People Convention truly marked a turning point in my career. Thanks to them, I had the privilege of photographing international stars such as Ian Somerhalder, Millie Bobby Brown, Chad Michael Murray, Tom Felton, Shantel VanSanten, Robert Knepper, and Noah Schnapp. When the company decided to expand to the United States, they immediately offered me the opportunity to join the venture and take on a key role. I was able to follow them to Los Angeles, a dream come true.
Since arriving here, I have participated in several projects that mean a great deal to me, including the film Screamboat by Steven LaMorte, with David Howard Thornton, Tyler Posey, and Allison Pittel. I was responsible for all behind-the-scenes photography, and seeing my work published in the New York Post, Variety, and SFX Magazine was an incredible honor. I also worked on the short film Always and For Never by Melissa Papel, where I was able to experiment with different lighting setups and atmospheres for each scene, a true technical and creative challenge. The short film was nominated in multiple festivals and won several awards.
More recently, I collaborated with fashion journalist Annabelle Kajbaf on the mini-series Tell Me Mode, which explores style and identity. My photos were later published in Glamour US and Teen Vogue US, an incredible recognition of my work and my ability to adapt to different creative worlds. Our next project, the new Tell Me Mode, will be published in Allure, which I am particularly proud of.
What sets me apart, according to those I have had the chance to work with, is my sensitivity, discretion, and ability to create an emotional connection with the people I photograph. For me, photography is not only about capturing what one sees, but what one feels. Whether on a set, at a concert, or at a convention, my goal remains the same: to capture genuine, emotional, and timeless moments, photos that will be treasured for years to come.
I am also very proud of the path I have traveled, obtaining my visa, moving to Los Angeles, and building an international career. Working alongside artists I admired since childhood, such as Cécilia Cara or Chad Michael Murray, has immense sentimental value for me. I have also learned, through more challenging experiences, to stay grounded and true to my values. In this industry, it is rare to meet authentic and kind people, but they do exist and they are the ones who helped me move forward and the only ones I choose to focus on. Difficult experiences and mistakes are meant to make us grow, but they do not define us.
Photography has never been an easy path, but every challenge, doubt, tear, disappointment, and sleepless night has allowed me to grow. If I have learned one thing, it is that passion and perseverance can truly change everything. One should never give up on their dreams and must always stay positive.
Today, I am excited to continue evolving, exploring new projects in film, and sharing my vision, one story, one emotion, and one photograph at a time.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting Los Angeles for a week, I’d want to show them the city in a way that captures its energy, beauty, and unique character. Here’s how I’d plan the perfect week:
Day 1: Start with a hike in Griffith Park up to the Hollywood Sign, then explore the Griffith Observatory for breathtaking views of LA. Take a stroll around the Griffith Reservoir and enjoy the fresh air.
Day 2: Head out to Topanga for a scenic hike through the canyons and hills. In the evening, drive along the coast to Malibu for another unforgettable sunset.
Day 3: Rent bikes and ride along the beach from Santa Monica to Marina del Rey, taking in the ocean breeze and the lively atmosphere. Stop at Venice Beach and explore the famous Venice Canals for a charming, unique experience. Finish the day watching the sunset at Santa Monica Pier.
Day 4: Explore The Grove and the Farmers Market for a stroll through the shops and atmosphere, then catch the sunset at Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area in Culver City, where the view of downtown LA is simply stunning.
Day 5: Spend the entire day at Red Rock Canyon, California, enjoying the incredible landscapes and outdoor adventure.
Day 6: Visit the Getty Museum to enjoy the art, architecture, and gardens, and later relax at Golden Road Brewery, a dog-friendly local favorite.
Day 7: Take a day trip to Joshua Tree National Park to marvel at the desert scenery and unique rock formations.
Day 8: End the week with the Studio City Farmers Market on Sunday morning for fresh strawberry juice and French pastries, a little taste of home in LA. Follow this with a visit to The Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens for a peaceful, inspiring afternoon among rare plants and historical collections.
Each day offers a new adventure, from stunning nature and iconic sights to local gems and cultural experiences. This itinerary would give my friend a truly unforgettable week in the city I love.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate this Shoutout to the people who have played a pivotal role in my artistic journey and have allowed me to believe in myself and pursue my ambitions.
Gregory Lemarchal inspired me from the very beginning through his determination and courage. His example taught me that no dream is impossible and that with perseverance, any obstacle can be overcome.
Cecilia Cara has been a source of inspiration through her kindness and artistic dedication. Since our first meeting in 2004, her support and encouragement have guided me, teaching me the importance of remaining authentic and professional in my work.
David Ban was the first to recognize my talent in photography and to place his trust in me. Thanks to him, I was able to develop my skills and gain valuable experience early on, and he has become both a mentor and a trusted person I can always rely on.
Chad Michael Murray has also had a significant impact on my career: through our meetings and collaborations, he recognized my work and encouraged me, which strengthened my confidence and helped me pursue my American dream.
Finally, Vanessa from People Convention deserves special mention. She provided me with the opportunity to come to the United States and fully develop my career. Working alongside her allowed me to strengthen my artistic and organizational skills, take on a key role within the company, and represent the brand internationally with consistency and quality.
Each of these individuals, in their own way, has contributed to giving me the courage, perseverance, and confidence necessary to excel in my field and continue building my artistic career in the United States.
