We had the good fortune of connecting with Skyler Rossa and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Skyler, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Consistency is the real key to success, and though I may struggle with consistency when it comes to things like going to the gym or waking up when my alarm goes off, I make an effort to practice consistency with my music career. Setting short term and long term goals for what I want to achieve whether that be shooting a music video or booking a specific performance venue helps drive momentum so I am always doing something to reach new audiences with my art. Staying active on social media is a major part of this consistency. I try to put consistent effort into the types of content I’m sharing and how often I’m posting. Half of the battle in this industry is showing up and getting in front of people! And social media is an incredible tool for doing that from anywhere in the world.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been writing and releasing my own original R&B/Pop music since 2019, back in South Philly recording in my house with artist collective, Voyager Sound. My sound is unique in the sense that no one really expects me to sound the way that I do – and I love to see that reaction every time I perform live or play my music for someone new. I draw influences from 90s Pop princesses and boy bands, R&B pioneers, but also the new school of R&B and Hip-Hop. I listen to a lot of rap and I think that makes my sound different than the mainstream of my genre. Even though this is my fifth year making music, I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface on what I can do as an artist! I am still experimenting with my sound, merging R&B with Pop and Hip-Hop influences, and expanding my craft as a writer to push myself to be more personal with what I’m sharing. None of it has been easy, but it’s natural to work hard in this area of life for me. Art has always been the most fulfilling part of my life since I was a kid in art class, theater, and orchestra. Music has the power to move people through making them feel and sharing intimate thoughts that most won’t say out loud but so many can relate to. I want my art to make people feel safe, understood, free!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve been having the best time getting to know my new home city of Los Angeles so this is a great question! Eating is one of my favorite activities so a lot of this will revolve around food. We would get dolled up and do dinner at Tesse, Avra, Beauty & Essex, and Terra at Eataly. A day trip to Malibu is essential, stopping for lobster rolls and beer at Broad Street Oyster Co., and spending the day at Point Dume which feels like a private beach experience and is super clean and zen. Hiking – of course – at Runyon Canyon or if we’re feeling lazy we’d go down the street to Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook Trail and probably end up undoing all of that work with some In N’ Out afterwards. If we’re grabbing drinks, there’s a low key library-esque bar in my area of West LA called The Wellesbourne that makes delicious creative cocktails or another nearby favorite is Harlowe in West Hollywood. If we’re going out for the night, we’d probably check out a comedy show at Bourbon Room and end up dancing to throwbacks or dancehall down the street in Hollywood at The Room. And if there’s time, everyone should go to Joshua Tree to unplug and ground themselves out in the desert because that’s one of my favorite places to vacation.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Since moving to Los Angeles in 2021, I’ve made so many connections via Instagram so I definitely want to shout out that platform as a whole! In particular, my genius engineer Viko Marley who understood my vision at first session and has helped me to clean up and release my four new singles last year. The director of my music videos for “Fire” and “Control,” Nick Sommers, is another gem I discovered on socials. He is always willing to work with the tight independent artist budget I have while pushing creative boundaries and bringing my music to life through fun visuals. I’ve gotten so much support from local press and radio (like VoyageLA!) including HAM Radio 101.5FM, who has been playing my original music on air in East LA, LA label for independent artists, Silver Gun Records, and all of the dope venues who have let me play on their coveted stages here. Obviously my man and my family are endlessly supportive of my goals and dreams, which is essential to my success and my inspiration!
