We had the good fortune of connecting with Sofia Gillani and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sofia, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success is being bold, loud and honest. I’m not afraid to express my thoughts and emotions through my music, it’s my creative outlet! Also my heritage is a mixture of east and west so my identity as an artist is unique, and I’m ridiculously experimental and proud of that.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It stemmed from having the ambition to use music as a creative outlet, to writing songs, to spending time in the studio perfecting my craft. I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember, so when my dad, a role model in music for me, being a past musician himself, guided me through the basics of creating tracks and refining the musical journey , the world has been my oyster from there. I’ve enjoyed the small victories, and have been constantly writing songs whenever the inspiration has called for it.

The world is my inspiration, and the relationships within it. My music is representative of my messages and emotions that I feel daily. So when I get even a hint of inspiration, it’s straight to the notes app! I’ll jot down random words or ideas about what I’m feeling, and then later put it into a song. It’s very freeing, and makes music so enjoyable for me. Over the years, I’ve definitely improved in how I illustrate those messages, and refined my skill.

Through my songs, I aim to share my personal experiences and create a sense of relatability with my listeners. None of my songs are the same, and each song explores a new genre. My style is young, and loud, and not limited to any specific type. I write all my music myself, and the creative process is simple. I express myself through music, so my songs are messages and meanings that have come from my life. It’s a beautiful process. It’s whatever comes to mind, from a few words, to a fully developed song with melodies and harmonies.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would plan a dreamy escape! off to Hampton Court Palace visit the famous hedge maze, Tudor knot which is set in formal gardens and open parkland along the Thames River. After we would head to Dastaan to enjoy the flavours and spices of Northern Pakistan. The tastiest authentic cuisine, all delivered with a contemporary twist, All in a days work!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I gained some traction in the music industry after a lead role in a musical, ‘Evita’ where I sang ‘Don’t Cry for Me Argentina’ at just 9 years old. Since then, I’ve spent my time perfecting my craft, independently through writing, producing, and directing music videos. Throughout this whole process my father has been there from the very start. Organising, encouraging and making things happen for me! I would not be where I am today without him.
