We had the good fortune of connecting with Solimar Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Solimar, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Since I was little I always wanted to be in fashion. I used to make mood boards, take pages out of magazines and I used to put outfits together.
Once I got older I started to draw my own designs and through the years discovered that the fashion industry can be not welcoming to many people.
This is why I then decided to make my brand unisex. I want everyone to be able to wear what makes them happy. The main concept of the brand is that clothes are a form of expression and not a definition of gender. People should be unbothered about other people’s opinion about the way they dress or choose to live their life so long as it does not affect others negatively.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
-As I mentioned before I have always been in love with designing and fashion.
-I believe what sets me and my brand apart from others is the amount of care I have put into selecting the product. Being a major consumer myself, I create with my customers in mind. I am most excited about the expansion of the brand and to see what it will grow to become.
-It was a long road to get here and I am just at the beginning of the pathway! I started UNBTHRD back in 2020 and it took many failed samples and even a fail production to get to our launch date in Nov 2021. So you can definitely say it was not easy but it was worth it, The way I was able to accomplish where I am today as a brand owner was through hard work and persistence. Blocking the outside noise and knowing and believing that I am doing what I am supposed to be doing.
-A few of the lessons I have learned are:
1. Success does not come overnight: The brands we see thriving in social media also had to work hard to get to where they are at.
2. Being a small business owner is a 24/7 commitment: Some days I am working until 10 or 11 o’clock at night.
3. Listen to the small signs to keep pushing: Things get hard sometimes but there are always little signs from the universe that tell us to continue to push and to continue to move forward.
-What I want to world to know about UNBTHRD is that this brand was create to bring people together. It is meant to make fashion a safe space where everyone can be themselves and feel comfortable in their skin.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend came to visit me in LA there are a few spots I would love to take them. Of course, we have to hike the Hollywood sign and then go to the beach, but the most important part is food we would go to L’Antica Pizzeria in Hollywood, Elephante in Santa Monica, Titos tacos in Culver City and to wrap it up we could get some cuban food at Tropicana in Downey!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout a few people who have helped me in the process.
1. My husband Elliot, he has been my rock through this process by listening and letting me go along with my crazy ideas. He is always there with any type of support needed. I even drag him along to all of our pop-ups and he is always ready and willing to help with the brand.
2. My family, they have supported my brand every step of the way by purchasing, sharing and by encouraging me to continue to push forward no matter what.
