We had the good fortune of connecting with Sonya Fichte and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sonya, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
To have a balance! It was very hard for me to find a middle ground between work and enjoying life. I believe if you work hard , then you deserve a holiday. But if you just holiday, or f you just work, you can lose yourself. Balance is the most important thing.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Nothing is easy, and especially if you want to make a living out of work that you truly love and makes you happy. I was trying to have many jobs around but got fired after a short period. So I told myself, follow your heart and all will be good. So I did. There were of course many challenges, as I live on my own without any support from anyone, but I see it as an adventure not as a struggle. Sometimes you are up and some you are down, that is the life, exciting. .

I believe that we should not think about money in the first place, we never are happy like that. Do what you love from the bottom of your heart and life, money, family all the satisfactions you wish for will come along. You don’t even realize.
I just want people to see it and give me an honest opinion.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am living in Mexico City, a city which is full of interesting places. In the first place I would convince my friend to stay longer than a week. One week is not enough for Mexico City, that’s for sure.

Mexico City is an international, beautiful city which grows so fast and never sleep. Many friends are coming to visit and decided to move here.

On a first place, I would take my friends to Pyramids, Teotihuacan.  A place full of energy, as there is the pyramid of the sun and pyramid of the moon. It is definitely and experience to go.

Food and art. Oaxaca City, they say here, that the best food comes from OAXACA, which I totally agree. City which is full of art, in all senses.

Drinks, this you can get on every corner all over Mexico. I would advise Mesczal, rather than Tequila.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

I absolutely have so many people, groups and books to thank along the way, and so they deserve to be shouted, because they are very talented artists, who inspired me and encouraged to become one of them.
First I would love to mention an incredible artist @robynwardstudio. His work and sense of detail is excellent. He is very focus on what he does, and he won’t stop, which has inspired me since I’ve know him.
My soulmate @shelleykensler , is another great painter. She has this strong female power, which I am happy to be surrounded by. She is not ashamed to put her emotions and feelings on canvas. I respect and admire that the most. She is interested in ceramics, she has incredible ideas, she is definitely worth the shout. Great artist.
He doesn’t really need to be shouted out as he was a great, famous incredible artist.. but Charles Bukowski inspires me so much because of his lifestyle, the way he loved, and his dark humor that makes me feel understood – I am always reading his work and will be forever.
