Meet Stacy Shon | Creative Entrepreneur | Watercolor + Hand Lettering Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Stacy Shon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stacy, what do you want your legacy to be?
I want my legacy to be about freedom and possibility. Ever since starting Letters & Feathers, my own little calligrpahy + watercolor art shop, I’ve been challenged in many ways to do things I’m uncomfortable with, yet it is in that place of discomfort and feeling of inadequacy that opens the door for possibility. There have been countless times I thought I couldn’t paint something a client requested or wanted to decline a big project because I was too intimidated. By saying “yes,” instead of “I can’t,” emerged a sense of freedom that was exhilirating.
After reaching my 30s, I’ve grown to identify and value what my true passions are and deeply connect to my purpose despite the limitations in my mind of what that would look like. A big hurdle for me was getting over what people thought I should be doing as someone who had a specific career path in filmmaking and production, which is still something I do as it still remains one of my passions. I don’t believe one’s path is linear, nor should it look like everyone elses’ and I hope my story can serve as a reminder for others to always return to and reconnect with their own dreams, convictions and desires. It is possible to do the things you love and it can happen in very unexpected ways.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Currently, I’m working on a bunch of holiday card orders as Christmas time is by far the busiest time of year for me and many other small businesses! I also have a number of custom calligraphy and watercolor projects in the works and I’m also gearing up for new product launches in 2022 on my Etsy shop, which I am very excited about!
On the entrepreneur side, I am constantly trying to learn more about how to run a creative business – listening to a ton of podcasts, researching online and talking to other creative entrepreneurs to expand my knowledge and grow my network. I am still learning and constantly trying to implement new business practices, efficiencies, etc. It’s like going back to school again, but you are your own teacher and many times I learn by trial and error!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh man, this is hard because I love LA so much — it’s my home, it’s where I was born and raised. The diversity of people, food, cultures is something so special about this city. Here is my itinerary in no particular order:
– Morning hike up Elysian Park
– Lunch at Kazu Nori (best hand rolls)
– Bestia for a nice Italian dinner
– Joy in Highland Park for a casual Taiwanese dinner
– Rent bikes and bike from Playa to Venice or further
– Brunch at Courage Bagels (best bagels ever!!)
– Boba and small bites at Bopomofo Cafe (everything is delicious)
– Wanderlust for ice cream
– The Americana on Brand to walk around and shop
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out my darling husband, Christopher who convinced me that my art is worth sharing and who supports me tirelessly in every way possible. He is my biggest encourager and continues to believe in me more than I believe in myself most days.
Letters & Feathers would also not be possible without God who inspires me to do what I do and gives me strength on days when I do not feel adequate.
Thank you SHOUTOUT LA for interviewing me for this piece!
