We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Harris-Uyidi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stephanie, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
My mantra over the last few years has been “do it scared.” Lately, I have been doing things that are way outside of my comfort zone, exciting opportunities that give me butterflies in my stomach! I’ve learned that fear is not something to run away from necessarily, rather something to explore.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As a pescatarian I specialize in creating dishes and recipes made from sustainably harvested seafood. If the term sustainable seafood is new to you, the the simplest way to think about it is that seafood is considered sustainable if it’s caught or cultivated in a manner that has minimal environmental and social impacts.

What sets me apart from other chefs is that I am one of the few that focus on cooking and education. For example, there are some varieties of seafood that pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems (children under 5, the elderly, etc.) should eat regularly and some that should be avoided all together. I have entire sections of the forthcoming cookbook, “Going Coastal,” dedicated this type of content.

As someone who enjoys roller skating, I appreciate smooth roads, but a clear, straight forward path is not how I’d describe my journey! My career began working in the entertainment industry for major film & TV studios and record companies in Los Angeles before moving to Orange County to begin graduate school. After receiving my MFA in Film & Television Producing and Screenwriting from Chapman University, I got heavily into cooking and traveling and with the help of some friends filmed a pilot for my show Appetite for Adventure! I pitched it around and received interest from Food Network. It was so exciting, but we did not end up making a deal, however I continued with production on the show.

The first season was produced on a shoe-string budget and we managed to get 12 episodes completed and ready for international distribution – the struggle came from having to match specs for different territories. This was a stressful, costly and time-consuming learning, but ultimately resulted in the show airing in 20+ countries and led to a more substantial budget for season two which.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Making Life Easier by Christiane Northrup is one of my favorite books and helped remind me that my physical health goes beyond eating well and exercise. My spiritual and emotional states must also be aligned, because they all influence each other.
