We had the good fortune of connecting with Steven Cortez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Steven, why did you pursue a creative career?
It’s something that I always was able to envision myself doing. For a long time it just stayed there. A vision in my mind. I didn’t talk about it or express those feelings till I decided to act. When I did everything made sense. It’s the only thing that makes sense at this point.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what’s special about my project is where I’m choosing to birth it from. The streets of LA. The west is still wild and country has always lived in this city and cities surrounding it. That’s something I don’t try and hide or alter. My influences for my music come far and wide and they all have a story on why that is. Living in a place like LA and pursuing a career in country music I don’t gotta worry about sounding like the guy next to me; I’m able to mold what makes me feel good. I can’t say the same about other cities that have a more majority country scene.

Country music is becoming cool again but for years I’ve been luckily to introduce my friends and supporters out in LA what real honky tonk rock n roll nights are all about live. It’s been special.
The challenges that come with this route is that not many people know who you are till you make enough noise for them to see you, but im coming.
I’m here to stay.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First we would definitely have to get breakfast burritos from Coffee Commissary along with coffee. Probably hit up some thrift stores like Leader of the Pack. Mid day Margaritas and lunch at El Condor in Silverlake or take a walk around Abbot Kinney and get Zinque after on the westside.
Then at night we go to my favorite place in LA, DESERT 5 SPOT in Hollywood. The best rooftop in the City.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think my choir conductor Mike McCullough can take huge credit for my choice to take on music as a career and passion. In high school I only took choir so it would place me under a special program that allowed me to go to a school outside of my district. Football and sports were big in my life at that time, but in that time spending it in choir as well, Mr. McCullough helped wake something up that I didn’t know was even possible for myself.
