Meet Steven Prince | Writer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Steven Prince and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Steven, how do you think about risk?
Risk is par for the course. Anything you set out to do is going to involve some level of risk. With creative work that that risk involves putting your work out there for the world to see, not knowing how it will be perceived. In that regard, risk is just part of following a creative path.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Currently I am writing the comic book MONSTER MATADOR, a character I created. It’s about a matador from Mexico that fights monsters to make a better future for his daughter. It’s Mad Max meets Godzilla with a bit of telenovela and every bit as awesome as it sounds. Our latest series is Monster Matador: Once Upon Some Monsters in Mexico. We launched the book at the beginning of the pandemic on Kickstarter and have been using that platform for each subsequent issue to raise funds for production and to build an audience. I wouldn’t say any of it is easy, but in the end it’s worth it to see the idea realized. A lot of the challenges involve reaching out and marketing, but over time we have been able to build an audience through Kickstarter and also conventions and store signings.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First stop would be the Sawtelle area for some sushi at my favorite Hide Sushi and then some desert at SomiSomi. The Nutella fish are amazing. Then catch a movie at the Nuart. To the beach in Malibu and a stop at the Getty Villa. LACMA and the Academy museum. Definitely a stop at Susie Cakes along the way. A Votre Santa in Brentwood for their amazing vegan Nachos. A tour of comic shops, Hi-De-Ho, Golden Apple, Pulp Fiction, and The Comic Bug. Hit up Hollywood Blvd and make time for a stop at La Luz De Jesus Gallery, And if it’s during the season, catch a show at The Hollywood Bowl.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t have been able to do without the support of my peers. Big shout out to fellow writer, Rylend Grant who has always taken the time to review my scripts and offer advice, as well as introducing me to Monster Matador artist, Fabio Alves. Karla Nappi is another peer who has taken the time to give me excellent notes. Writer and White Ash Comics publisher Charlie Stickney has been a fountain of advice as far as running Kickstarters and publishing. I can go on and on, as there are so many people who have helped me along on this journey… oh, and since I mentioned Fabio, our amazing artist, I also want to give a shoutout to the rest of the team, colorist Alex Zief, Proofreader Katrina Roets, and Dr. Theresa Rojas who contributed a Study Guide to our first collection.
