We had the good fortune of connecting with Su Lwin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Su, why did you pursue a creative career?
Ever since I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a novelist. There is no other longing that I’ve felt more deeply than that, even though I wished many times that I didn’t.
My road to writing was a difficult one because I didn’t get much encouragement from my family when I was young. I inherited a lot of limiting beliefs from them, and it took me a long time to start writing, and keep writing. But I always felt no matter how much the odds were stacked against me, writing was a dream that I couldn’t give up on, and that’s what made me keep going.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The path towards my current career was circuitous. I had a late start in life because I didn’t go to university until I was 23, and spent a few years studying at TAFE (tertiary education in Australia that’s kind of like community college). I wasn’t passionate about anything that I studied in those years and ended up quitting everything I did, until I decided to take a break from studying and worked at a casino as a cocktail waitress for a few years, before I finally went to uni and majored in English.
After I graduated, I didn’t really have any idea what I wanted to do. I just hoped that I would end up working with words, and ended up becoming a research analyst.
The biggest thing I’d want to tell people from my journey is that it’s never too late to start working on your dreams.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d take her on all my favorite hikes and the iconic hikes of LA- Los Leones, Amir’s Garden via Mt Hollywood, the Hollywood Sign. We’d go to a show at The Comedy Store, walk around Abbot Kinney, walk around Beverly Hills. We’d get some Mexican, maybe at Holbox or Tenampal, and also Italian at Funke or Felix.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
All the people who believed in and encouraged me when I told them about my silly little dreams
