We had the good fortune of connecting with Sujoy Haldar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sujoy, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued a career as a musical artist because it provides me with creative, emotional, and empowering fulfillment. It is a privilege to know that whenever I play music or people listen to songs I’ve written, they can connect with them on a level that ignites various emotions—whether that be happiness, sadness, excitement, purposefulness, inquisitiveness, reminiscence, love, and more. To be able to connect and impact people on that level and to see it resonate with others, creating a community around it, establishes a cherished atmosphere, feeling, and environment that extends beyond what I can achieve alone. Music is my medium for conveying a message, feeling, and experience.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m thrilled to announce the debut of my first EP in 2024. I’ve been brewing ideas for years and have a stack of tracks in my catalogue to show for it. My journey to this point has been a blend of good fortune and hard work. I feel blessed to have been surrounded by immensely talented individuals at USC, where competitive energy fueled my drive and friendships blossomed with like-minded artists. Overcoming challenges of financial hardship, loneliness, existential doubt, and fatigue, I found solace and strength in my dedication to music. I’ve come to cherish time as the most valuable asset.

Leading with kindness in relationships and self-care has been my mantra, coupled with banishing imposter syndrome and demanding the best from myself to achieve optimal outcomes. Through my music, I aim to share my stories—personal and fictional—each carrying a unique message. Whether it’s an invitation to dance or an opportunity to simply have a good time, there’s a feeling to be found and felt in my music, and I can’t wait to share it with the world.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In LA, especially when it comes to food, my go-to spot is Grand Central Market in DTLA. It offers a plethora of quality, diverse, and delicious options to suit any palate—Olios wood-fired pizza, Stick Rice, and Knead are among my favorites. For a night out, if a house party isn’t in the cards, I’m a fan of bars/clubs like On the Rox (above the Roxy Theater), Delilah, and Poppy. If there’s an artist in town, the Hollywood Bowl or Palladium is where we’d be. Given my love for surfing, a weekend trip to El Porto, regardless of their surfing prowess, would be on the agenda. Post-surf, we might head to KazuNori or the Del Rey Yard House for a heartier meal.

For those wanting to capture some cool photos, LACMA or a night shoot at Mulholland drive is a must. If live music and cocktails appeal to them, a trip to NOHO for some jams at the Federal could be an unforgettable experience—I even bumped into Thundercat and his brother there twice, though I’m not sure if they still frequent the spot. I’d likely create a day-by-day itinerary while leaving a day or two open for them to explore LA on their terms and try something new.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have a long list of people to thank for where I am in my story. Firstly, my family, a supportive unit that never stifled my creative or artistic pursuits, despite the challenges they faced immigrating to the U.S. and raising me as a first-generation American. I’m grateful for a community of artists and producers who have collaborated with me, offered support, and inspired me. One notable collaborator is mixedbydanish (Danish Faizi), an artist/producer with whom I worked on ‘Hunting,’ and with whom I continue to actively collaborate on projects. Lyn Starr, a Shoutout LA Mag alumnus and a talented artist, collaborated with me on ‘So Long’ (along with Spotify noteable) and introduced me to all of you. I also must mention Alex Hein from the DJ Duo Sunday Scaries, my former roommate at USC. We spent nights working on music, sharing ideas, discussing our music careers, lives, and ambitions while navigating our senior year of college.
