We had the good fortune of connecting with Sulema Fernández-Honn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sulema, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks has truly changed my life for the better. It has allowed me to confront my fears and pursue my aspirations, even when the outcome is uncertain. It’s scary to venture into the unknown, not knowing if I’ll succeed or fail. But taking risks has taught me to appreciate the act of trying, rather than living with regret and wondering “what if?” I’ve learned to embrace the uncertainty and trust that the experience will be worth it, regardless of the outcome.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As an artist who wears a business hat, I have the unique privilege of experiencing two worlds: the creative aspect and the financial/marketing/sales end. I thoroughly enjoy creating products that utilize my artistic abilities and background in illustration, makeup artistry, design, and painting to craft my jewelry and art projects. However, juggling the business end also empowers me to have control over what works and what doesn’t. It’s a fusion of finance and creativity that makes me fully responsible for what I create for consumers. This dual role allows me to bring my artistic vision to life while ensuring its commercial viability. It’s challenging yet rewarding journey, as each collection is distinct and special. But witnessing my creations come to life is the most fulfilling experience, whether it’s seeing someone wear my jewelry or an art piece adorning someone’s home. Pursuing one’s dreams and passions is never easy, and the road has been long and winding. However, having a support system has been crucial, and self-belief has been essential. And even failures serve as valuable learning experiences, shaping me into a better artist and entrepreneur. Ideas can stem from anything – a dream, an inspiration, a vision, or something seen without realizing it. People, other artists, and history can all serve as sources of inspiration. Some ideas will work, while others won’t, but that’s all part of the creative process. It requires patience, experimentation, and refinement to bring ideas to life. I just want my clients to be happy with the final product and enjoy it for generations to come.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Living in sunny Southern California offers endless activities! I’d take them to Disneyland, the happiest place on earth, and give them a tour of Olvera Street, where Los Angeles was born. A Hollywood star tour is a must-do for fun. We’ll hit the beautiful beaches, with Laguna Beach being my favorite. I’ll introduce them to our amazing street taco scene in LA, with plenty of options to choose from. Next, we’ll head to the Packing District in Orange County for a foodie adventure. Downtown LA’s Movie Palace tour is a must-see, along with the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and The Huntington Museum. A day trip to San Diego for shopping and great food is a must, and Temecula for wine tasting. With LA and OC being so vast, there’s always something new to explore!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am grateful to have a few special individuals in my life who have encouraged and pushed me to pursue my aspirations as an artist, designer, and business owner. First and foremost, my parents, who are no longer with us, but always instilled in me the importance of education and following my dreams, especially as a female. My sisters, who have been shining examples in my life and have unwaveringly believed in me, no matter what. My husband, who has never lost faith in my capabilities and has supported me in all my dreams. And my children, who inspire me to persevere, no matter what obstacles may arise. It’s clear that family is the foundation of building anything meaningful, from the ground up.
