We had the good fortune of connecting with Sunita Chiu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sunita, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
As I age, I’ve noticed a shift in my work-life balance. In the past, I could sustain a hectic schedule of a full-time day job, evening performances, weekend commitments, and even extracurricular classes. However, with each passing year, I’ve come to acknowledge the diminishing span of my burnout tolerance. As the natural aging process unfolds, my body signals the need for prioritizing both my mental and physical well-being. Unlike before, I now recognize the importance of taking sick days when necessary, understanding the signs that demand self-care. This shift in perspective allows me to achieve success by striking a healthier balance tailored to my body’s needs.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve crafted a narrative that encompasses my diverse pursuits as an actor, model, singer, dancer, host, and event manager. From a small town in Malaysia, my childhood dreams were inspired by the likes of Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act. Despite societal expectations, my true calling emerged in acting, where I could embody various personas.

Enrolling in dance and music classes from a young age, my passion flourished. At 15, being cast in my first musical became a turning point. Dedication led me to Singapore, where I trained and performed as a full-time actor before expanding to Kuala Lumpur and now the United States.

While my journey hasn’t been without challenges, I’ve overcome obstacles, convincing both myself and others of my dedication. Pursuing a career demanding significant investments not just from my individual self but from the people around me, I faced many doubts and expectations but now I’m proud to call myself an international performance artist.

Coming from a small town, my exposure to show business intricacies was limited. I honed my craft through a lifetime of lessons, drama school, auditions, research, and immersion. Family and friends played a pivotal role, enriching my artistry with multicultural influences. Despite imposter syndrome, repetition, varied perspectives, intention, interest, and gratitude enhance every endeavor.

In essence, my journey is a blend of passion, perseverance, and cultural richness, shaping me into the artist I am today.
