We had the good fortune of connecting with Sunny Ferguson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sunny, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I thought it would be a great idea to create a unique skincare and beauty studio that would make people feel welcomed, seen, heard, pampered, and, most importantly, comfortable. A space where they wouldn’t feel shame for having skin issues or feel as though they are merely a transaction. And most importantly, a place that was inclusive to any and everyone. So I decided to open GB Aesthetics. I took everything I’ve learned throughout my years in hospitality, customer service, and cosmetology to create a beautiful space and memorable experience.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is a private beauty studio in Miami, FL, called GB Aesthetics. I work to improve skin health and educate my clients on how to care for their skin properly. My specialty is treating skin concerns like acne and hyperpigmentation, but I also have experience managing other skin issues. In addition, I offer brow services, lash services, and permanent makeup. My expertise in working with melanin-rich skin sets me apart from others, and my customized science-based approach to improving my client’s skin. I am most proud of my ability to build authentic and lasting relationships with my clients organically. I am excited about the business’s growth and the upcoming opportunities to share my space with other like-minded beauty pros. I got to where I am today by not settling for what’s convenient or comfortable. Starting my business was scary and complex, but it was worth every challenge. I overcame my challenges by making plans, accepting help, and being honest about what I could or couldn’t control. Some lessons I’ve learned along the way include not being hard on myself or comparing myself to others, writing everything down, being open to corrective criticism; education is crucial, and always finding ways to improve the business. I want the world to know that I genuinely care about my clients, and my brand will always do its best to help them feel just as good as they look.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The love of my life Panda deserves some credit and recognition for my success. She has always been so supportive and encouraged me in so many ways. She has played a considerable role in helping me get to where I am today. She made me feel it wasn’t my dream being fulfilled but ours. She not only designed the layout of the studio, but she built and put up the first walls inside herself. I am forever grateful for her love and joy she brings me.
