Meet Super Piano Brothers | Music Group

We had the good fortune of connecting with Super Piano Brothers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Super Piano Brothers, why did you pursue a creative career?
For all of our lives, the arts have had a constant presence in our lives, whether it came from formal studies as encouraged by our parents, exposure from museums and exhibitions, or through the vast amounts of fantastic media that we eagerly consumed. Our simple enjoyment of the arts in its endless variety was enough motivation for us to pursue continued studies and careers in art, driven by the desire to give back what we enjoyed. Through happenstance, music was the primary vehicle for us to express ourselves, and we quickly found enormous joy from replicating tunes from movies and video games for our friends. It was as though we could relive the happiness and pleasure of experiencing the music all over again just by sharing it, plus the bonus gratification that comes from putting our own creative stamp upon it.
Since then, though our lives and circumstances have led us in wildly unexpected directions, that same thrill of creating and sharing that joy has never left us. Our dedication to that mission is renewed with every new work we encounter, particularly those that invite reinterpretation and reimagining. We are passionate about utilizing our classical training to bridge the gap between artistic styles, genres, or cultures, and also value representation across media.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The core vision of the Super Piano Brothers is to reinvent the soundtracks of the media we grew up loving and to infuse it with a fresh yet classically-grounded style. We value collaboration as well as Asian-American representation in media, and seek to bridge gaps whether they lie between artistic styles, genres, or cultures.
While our musical training is classically-founded, we embrace an all-inclusive approach as musicians (from composing, arranging, transcribing, and performing), and favor blending varying styles to create the unique yet familiar and nostalgic. We take pride in our art having a positive impact on our audience, whether it be putting smiles on listeners, or inspiring others to explore music.
Our mission is two-fold; we want to both spread classical music and its techniques to larger audiences who may not listen to it regularly, and also shine a spotlight on the beautiful music of films and video-games, which despite their often subservient nature, pack the most impactful emotional punch.
We believe we are the best at what we do because of our unique perspective and passion. We are constantly looking for new bridges between styles and genres, and cherish the beauty of every unexpected connection.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We are all avid museum-goers, and Los Angeles is home to some of the greatest in the world, from the extensive collection at Getty to the boundary-pushing galleries of LACMA and the Broad. The Griffith Observatory is another must-see. On the culinary end, you can often spot us on our way to-and-from San Gabriel Valley with its vast array of authentic and delicious Chinese cuisine (favorites include Malubianbian, Xiaolongkan, and Shancheng Lameizi hotpots), Koreatown for the utmost best KBBQ, while Little Tokyo boasts a fantastic selection of affordable yet high-quality Japanese food ranging from udon at Marugame Monzo to the selections of Hama Sushi. Lastly, nature-lovers can take respite from LA’s endless sprawling highways at the Huntington Library and Gardens, home to a spectacularly diverse and vibrant collection of plants and botanical cultivation.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It’s always been difficult to pinpoint any one specific person or entity to whom we owe our thanks. Almost any conscientious professional will readily acknowledge that the path to success is paved with the support and assistance of countless others. It is completely the same for us. From our humble beginnings of borrowing friends with camcorders in cramped music studios to forming collaborations with established artists in all fields, we deeply cherish the connections we’ve made and the power that comes from those connections. That being said, there are a few names from our history we’d like to mention.
One of our first major supporters was Sherry Kim, (once a highly active music YouTuber) who leveraged her own success to help us gain a foothold in the online community both by promoting and performing with us. Our good friend and classmate Lev Nesterov was also a staunch supporter as we developed our recording catalog, assisting us with any odds-and-ends we needed at the time. In more recent times, filmmaker Christine Zivic and photographer Kevin Hsu (both currently active in the LA area) have generously contributed their experience, time, and skill for our most recent projects. And of course, we could not omit the love and support of our loved ones, in particular Wesley’s girlfriend Misaki Saito, herself an accomplished pianist who has collaborated with the group on numerous occasions.
