We had the good fortune of connecting with Susan Van Daal and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Susan, how do you think about risk?
I don’t know if I really believe in “taking risks” but I believe in leaving the known behind and stepping out of what feels comfortable and expand in all unfamiliar areas of life. After a break up at 28 years old I left everything behind, a good job, a house and my home country. I moved to Portugal and started life from scratch. Three years after I moved to Los Angeles and started my holistic doula service – Inanna care. It has never been a risk but it came with insecurities, for sure. Will I make enough money to sustain myself? Will I find a community again that I can rely on?
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I made quite radical shift in my career in the last 6 years. The work I had been doing with indigenous communities and my own journey to heal from an autoimmune disease helped me to identify what my purpose in life is. So where I once worked in market research and PR I shifted gears and devoted my life to study the holistic healing modality Ayurveda and how it can benefit new mothers. I became a doula and Ayurvedic practitioner.
Even though holistic medicine helped me heal from an autoimmune disease I always kept having a passion for scientific (nutritional) research. So in my practice I create a bridge between the two – nutritional science and studies on herbs and Ayurveda. All the plants and herbs I work with I have researched as well on its western and Ayurvedic benefits and contra-indications. This counts as well for other prenatal, birth and maternal care practices. Ususally I see people either going for the Western philosophy and neglecting all the Eastern wisdom or the other way around. I believe in synergy.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would mainly hang out in nature, for example at the beach – Carbon Beach in Malibu, I would go on hikes at Red Rock Canyon and Entrado.
For dinner I would go to Bacari in Playa del Rey with very nice tapas and Mediterranean food. I would go to Topanga Living Cafe to have lunch and go to one of the events at Wildwood in Topanga.
I don’t drink so my evenings would be quiet. 🙂
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Julie Freitas a birth doula with over 35 years of experience was my first mentor and shared her knowledge generously with me. And honestly, I think that all the practices i have been doing with indigenous communities like the Huni Kuin from Brazil really helped me grow in my personal life and therefore in my professional life as well.
