Meet Susie Luo | Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Susie Luo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Susie, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Pursuing a creative career is not just a choice for me—it feels like an inevitable part of my life. First and foremost, I have a deep and genuine passion for art, and I truly enjoy every step of the creative process. Through this process, I embark on a journey of self-discovery, which I find profoundly healing. From a young age, my mind was always filled with wild and imaginative ideas, and art gave me a unique sense of freedom to bring those ideas to life.
As I grew older, I began to realize that art is not only a way to express myself but also a powerful medium to influence others. Through my work, I have the opportunity to touch people’s lives, offering them meaning, comfort, or inspiration. If someone can find resonance in my creations, or draw hope and strength from them, it is truly the greatest reward for me.
Art also acts as a mirror, allowing me to confront my innermost thoughts. Whenever I am immersed in the act of creating, everything else fades away, and it feels as though I am having an honest conversation with myself. In those moments, I experience a profound sense of belonging, as if I am truly home within myself. I see who I really am, hear my inner voice, and engage in the most authentic dialogue with my soul. To me, this is not only the power of art but also the essence of life itself—to understand, explore, and expand oneself.
For these reasons, a creative career is more than just a profession for me; it is a calling of the soul. It allows me to express who I am while connecting with the world through my work. To me, this is the most beautiful journey life has to offer.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work primarily revolves around the ritual and cyclical nature of self-healing, delving into the intricate relationship between the body and emotions through richly textured sculptural installations. Drawing inspiration from my personal experiences of multiple childhood surgeries and years of dance training, I focus on the innate qualities of the body—its softness, fragility, elasticity, extension, and rhythm. I strive to make my works an extension of the body, enabling multidimensional interaction with space.
Fabric is my primary medium, symbolizing a “second skin” and a vessel for emotional experience. Through processes of stretching, cutting, knotting, and burning the fabric—then fixing it in place with nails—I create “beautiful scars.” The sense of rupture present in my work embodies an internal tension and aesthetic allure. It is through this ritual of self-tearing and reconstitution that I seek to create a new method of self-healing.
With these textiles, I construct an abstract world filled with scars—a world imbued with rhythm, melody, and profound emotion. Different viewers may interpret it in diverse ways, as each person brings their unique life experiences to the encounter. These scars become bearers of both personal and collective emotional cycles.
The work itself resembles a visual ritual, where the cyclical use of materials and the transformation of forms extend beyond personal emotion to broader, more traumatic themes, such as war and history. This exploration reveals the universal interplay between fragility and resilience, pain and healing. It serves as a form of self-healing through artistic expression, embodying the continual regeneration and reformation of the human body and identity.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, my friends and family have been my greatest source of unwavering support, encouragement, and love. They have stood by me through every challenge and celebrated with me in every success. Their belief in me has been a constant reminder that I am never truly alone in this journey.
In addition to my loved ones, the works of great thinkers like Martin Heidegger, Friedrich Nietzsche, Michel Foucault, and Hermann Hesse have been invaluable companions during some of my loneliest moments. Their writings have offered me profound wisdom, comfort, and perspective, guiding me through the complexities of existence and helping me make sense of the world and my place within it.
Above all, I want to honor and pay tribute to the artists who continue to shine and inspire, even during their darkest and most challenging moments. Many of these individuals live under immense pressure, uncertainty, and instability, yet they persist in creating works of beauty, depth, and meaning. Through their creativity, they channel tremendous spiritual energy into the world, making our lives richer, more vibrant, and infinitely more interesting.
These artists are the ones who push against the tide of conformity, reminding us of the importance of diversity in thought, expression, and vision. They extend the boundaries of our collective imagination, daring to envision and create worlds beyond the ordinary. To these creators, who refuse to let adversity dim their light and who continue to expand the horizons of our reality, I owe the deepest gratitude. Their resilience and brilliance inspire not just admiration but a profound sense of hope for what humanity is capable of achieving.
