We had the good fortune of connecting with Suzanne Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Suzanne, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“How you do one thing is how you do everything.”
My mentor, Erikaa Briones, told me this and it changed my outlook on life. I had to notice how I was doing one thing and apply that viewpoint across everything else- and realized it was all the same.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My lifelong passion and personal journey have ignited my purpose within feminine empowerment. I love to photograph women because it’s something I’ve always felt that I am great at. I want to inspire women to reclaim their innate power. My mission is to allow each person I photograph to feel beautiful and empowered, in aspiration to integrate that feeling beyond the photoshoot and into their lives.
My journey was paved out for me quite early, as I knew I wanted to be a photographer since I was 15. However, I often strayed from my path to explore other varieties of life. Sometimes it was a distraction, and sometimes it was more of a lesson to be learned. I often felt guilty for not photographing “all the time” like it seemed that others were doing online. I want to emphasize that social media is not real life! When we play the comparison game, nobody wins. I felt insecure because I felt like I wasn’t shooting enough. But I learned to go at my own pace, and knowing that I create my work in perfect timing for my clients. No matter how far I strayed, no matter how long it had been, I always found myself back with my camera in-hand. It’s a piece of my heart that always calls me home.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I actually have been asked this recently in real life as well. I love being at the beach, so that’s usually my number one. I would have to say 2nd Street in Belmont Shores. I used to work down there for over a year, and it’s a great little community with lots of shops and restaurants. It’s a blast.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many amazing people that I can give a shout out to that have helped me along the way. Friends, acquaintances, fellow photographers and artists, teachers, professors, the list goes on! So many people have given me opportunities that I would have never thought I’d have before. Photography has taken me to many places that have allowed me to connect and create with others. However, I would like to give a special shout out to my mentor Erikaa Briones (@erikaabriones) for being my mentor throughout these last two years. She goes above and beyond and I am thankful for her guidance and support.
