We had the good fortune of connecting with Sydnee Ackiss and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sydnee, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end?
The end goal of my career is to be a well-known Director who has made an impact on the Horror genre. Other genres interest me as well but jumpscares, suspense, and overall fear fascinate me. Personally, I feel like horror hasn’t been what it used to be. With horror, all scary movies have a sub-genre, whether it’s a Slasher, paranormal, found footage, you name it. We get the occasional good horror flick but we don’t have the specific sub-genres anymore that are new and exciting, we just have what’s already been done a million and one times. One of my biggest goals is to find a new sub-genre for horror that brings back that excitement and create a new era of horror. It’ll be a long progress and hard work but in time I hope to accomplish it.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I help run Cinemoth Productions, we are a Production Company and traveling crew that pride ourselves to give high-quality productions at a low cost. We started our business last year, and it’s been an upward climb but things are rolling now. We moved up to Georgia from Orlando, Florida, and had to build from the ground up, didn’t know a soul in town. After putting ourselves out there, going to film meetups and expos, and lots of emailing, we have built a client list that continues to grow. We range from filming commercials, promos, music videos, short films, and of course feature films. We own all of our own equipment that we’ve built over the last three years. Putting ourselves out there and throwing ourselves into situations we weren’t comfortable with has helped us tremendously. I would recommend to anyone, to put themselves out there. Talk to the executive producer across the room that you’re nervous to talk to. You never know what can come out of it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A fun place to take people are the antique stores. We always love to go search for antique cinema gear. Some good restaurants are in Atlanta by the stadium, they have some great hangout spots for a good time. Although rally when people visit we always tend to plan some kind of short film for fun. Just all of us having a good time while creating something for all of us to enjoy. We’re so passionate about film to a point where we are always filming.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shout out Ricardo Moreno, he is my boyfriend of five years now, and he introduced me to the world of cinema. I always enjoyed watching movies but he opened up a new world to me. Watching movies and analyzing them, seeing the movement of the shot and seeing how it makes you feel, studying dialogue and character choices, and just picking them apart to pieces. That made me realize that film is something I want to explore, something I want to dive into, so after he graduated high school we made a deal to go to film school together, and that’s where my path to a film director started.
