We had the good fortune of connecting with Sydney Benjamin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sydney, what role has risk played in your life or career?

Pretty much every success I have had in my life came from taking a risk. Since I was a child, I knew that I wanted to create and I consistently took risks. Sometimes I definitely looked like a fool, but every single risk I have ever taken has led to where I am! A goofball, creating fun videos for the internet, writing and producing short films, and one day soon a feature film. If you aren’t willing to take risks, you aren’t willing to succeed. While the safe choice might feel better in the short term, taking risks helps you grow as a person, an artist, a creator, a business owner, and a human!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

My life has done a 180 in the last few months. My tiktok grew overnight and I became this spectacle that the entire internet was looking at. Prior to that I had been creating, writing, filming, podcasting, joking, YouTubing, doing everything I possibly could to put fun content out into the world. It took a dress not fitting for my page to get noticed, I have continued to create and make my little corner of the internet a space for comedy, positivity, love, acceptance, and compassion, with a whole lot of tomfoolery.

As an actor it is tough out there. We go to hundreds of auditions to get rejected. After a teacher of mine told me “why wait for someone to give you an opportunity, create your own opportunities” I did just that. I began writing, and creating. In less than a year I was able to write a feature field, three short films, and co-wrote a tv series. Some of these have been filmed, are in the planning stages, or will be filmed in the near future.

The biggest thing that I want people to take away from my story is that we can all create our own opportunities, start small, start big, just start somewhere. Stop waiting for someone to give you permission to achieve your dreams, go out there and make them happen!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

LA has so many fun trendy spots, but my favorite things in this world are my people, and spending quality time creating memories. I wouldn’t plan a fancy day hitting all of the tourist traps. I would plan a fun evening at “The Cat and the Fiddle Pub”, which not only has incredible food, but the vibes are immaculate, with great music, and a great atmosphere. I am also a sucker for a good movie night, so would definitely plan a night at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, or a drive-in theatre. Also brunch- you cannot spend a weekend in LA without brunch- if we want a hike and lunch head down to Point Vicente Lighthouse, and finish with a walk to Yellow Vase.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have a crazy amazing group of friends that have helped make my dreams of creating a reality. First off my friends who take the time to watch all my videos (no matter how lame they have been), they have encouraged me since I was teen to keep being me, and putting myself out there. Then there is my creative team, who help me bring my stories to life- Ryan, Pim, Luke, Gavin, Kirsten, who have been the most supportive crew and friends. And lastly my writing partner Michael Testut, who has listened to every crazy idea of mine… and helped me put it to words!
