We had the good fortune of connecting with Tairan Hao and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tairan, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic and creative career because I have always been captivated by the profound influence of art on human perception and society. Growing up in a dynamic environment exposed me to a rich blend of cultural and technological intersections. This unique background profoundly shaped my understanding of identity, compelling me to delve into the complexities of both personal and collective experiences through art.

Art serves as a powerful medium to challenge and expand conventional boundaries. It enables me to fuse emerging technologies with traditional artistic practices, crafting immersive and interactive experiences that engage audiences in novel ways. My work is fundamentally rooted in leveraging technology to redefine the relationship between artwork and its audience, transforming viewers from passive observers into active participants. This approach mirrors the dynamic interplay between technology and human perception, underscoring the innovative potential of interdisciplinary methods in shaping contemporary artistic expression.

For me, art transcends self-expression; it is a conduit for engaging with broader societal issues and provoking thoughtful discourse. The rapid advancements in technology have endowed artists with new tools and languages, allowing us to create immersive experiences that challenge perceptions and invite active participation. Through my work, I strive to explore themes of personal identity, social policy, political change, and environmental crises, using art as a medium to address the complexities of our contemporary world.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art blends traditional practices with cutting-edge technology to create immersive and interactive experiences. What sets my work apart is the integration of technology, transforming viewers from passive observers into active participants and engaging deeply with themes of identity, society, and technology. This unique approach allows me to explore the boundaries between the virtual and the real, the digital and the natural, and the tangible and intangible, inviting audiences to engage with these concepts in meaningful ways.

One of the aspects I am most excited about is the process of creation, especially exploring the connection between the technological medium and the concept of the work. For example, one of my recent projects “Remains to be Unfolded” examines the intersection of political discourse and technology, using sculptural materials and projectors to explore themes of isolation, narrative control, and collective consciousness. This work, along with others, aims to provoke thought and foster a deeper understanding of our contemporary world.

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned along the way is the value of collaboration and community. Engaging with other artists, technologists, curators, critics, collectors, and thinkers has not only enriched my work but also provided invaluable insights and opportunities for growth.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of the most captivating contemporary art museums in Los Angeles is The Broad. Located in downtown LA, The Broad stands out not only for its striking architecture, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, but also for its extensive collection of post-war and contemporary art. Home to nearly 2,000 works, including pieces by renowned artists such as Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman, and Yayoi Kusama, The Broad offers an immersive experience that challenges and inspires visitors. Its innovative “veil-and-vault” concept seamlessly blends public exhibition spaces with the storage of the collection, making it a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts and those looking to explore the forefront of contemporary artistic expression.
