We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamara Falvai, L.Ac. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tamara, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
One of the core principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, is the idea of treating the root cause of illness rather than
just the symptoms. In TCM, we refer to this concept as addressing the “Ben” (the root) and the “Biao” (the branch). Symptoms, like pain, fatigue, or insomnia, or even perimenopause— are considered branches of a deeper imbalance in the body. Instead of just masking those symptoms, We aim to identify and correct the underlying cause.

This is done through a diagnostic process that involves a detailed evaluation of the patient’s physical, emotional, and lifestyle factors. Tools like pulse diagnosis, tongue inspection, and a thorough patient history help form what’s called a pattern diagnosis — a way of understanding how various signs and symptoms connect as part of a larger imbalance.

The treatment is then customized based on this pattern.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’ve been a licensed acupuncturist for the past 19 years, practicing in Malibu, where I specialize in pain management and orthopedics—particularly in treating pre- and post-operative pain and injury rehabilitation. Over the years, I’ve also developed a strong focus on supporting women through the perimenopausal and menopausal transition using Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and lifestyle changes.

I’m passionate about empowering my patients—especially women navigating menopause—to make sustainable lifestyle changes that alleviate symptoms and improve overall wellbeing. This way they have the tools and knowledge to live as the best version of themselves everyday. In addition to private practice, two years ago I launched a weekly community acupuncture hour here in Malibu to make care more accessible.

Most recently, I completed certification as a Health Coach through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in 2024/2025, which has further enhanced my ability to guide patients in integrating mind-body wellness into their daily lives. I am currently working on developing an online based coaching program to guide woman in perimenopause in how to take back their lives and feel like themselves again.

My journey to where I am today has been just that-a journey. I was at a loss after undergrad of what direction to take in life. After attending a meditation retreat in Nepal for a month, I came to a realization that I wanted to follow the path of treating people by understanding the root of their issues in order to gain sustainable health. At first, business was inconsistent and very frustrating. I had all this widespread, amazing knowledge in how to heal people, but what I really needed was a specialization and learn how to market that. I had no training in the business side of things, so I invested in myself through continuing education on my chosen speciality as well as finding a business coach.

Along this journey how I lived my life became the embodiment of how i was treating and coaching my patients. When I started “walking the walk” as they say, I think this gave authenticity to my business. I am an athlete myself which led me to an interest in treating pain and sports injury. More recently as I and my friends around me have entered our 40s and 50s, I am fining myself becoming passionate in educating and empowering woman entering into perimenopause and menopause.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would have them come to Malibu! I would take them on a hike in the Santa Monica Mountains, starting at Zuma Canyon trailhead. For mountain Biking, try out the Backbone trail. If the beach and surfing is what they desired I would recommend Zuma beach, or if tide pools was more to there liking I would say go to Leo Carrillo state beach at low tide. An amazing hidden gem in the hills for eating and hanging is the Old Place. For the best view, walk up the short trail on Big Dume to the point. To find peace with a meditation or yoga class go to The Mindry. For expert private or duo pilates classes visit JillianStein at Inochi body space.
