We had the good fortune of connecting with Tarun Shetty and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tarun, what role has risk played in your life or career?
There was risk in everything I’ve done and created. (films/tv/podcast, even the auditions I’ve gone on.) Forget about commercial success, just the act of doing something creative involves risk. Especially now with social media, you are leaving your digital footprint in the universe.

I think coming to Los Angeles in itself is a risk. There are many people going after the same dream with X amount of spots. It’s a zero sum game and not everyone “makes it.” You are gambling with your life and taking a risk. Time is something you can never get back and hopefully the journey was worth it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I host and produce a podcast called The Convo Sutra. It’s a South Asian video panel podcast where we interview influential South Asians from all walks of life but also have free-flowing conversations about current issues. I’m really excited about this because the podcast is growing exponentially by the month, and we have big plans for the future.

I got to where I am today by establishing a track record of risk and failure. I was never satisfied with opportunities presented to me in Hollywood so I created my own work. I produced a viral web series, have made feature movies and TV pilots. Everything presented its own unique challenges to learn and grow from. I believe I was able to overcome them by my strong desire to succeed, but was also motivated by a strong creative vision.

I’ve learned that not everything works out EXACTLY how I want. But with each project, I’ve gained valuable experience, made new relationships, and most importantly have become a better artist to prepare me for what’s next.

I just want the world to enjoy my work, and hope it makes someone’s day a little brighter.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I hosted a travel show on Facebook and went to a town called Woodstock, Vermont. It was quaint and beautiful. Really a nice getaway spot that I would recommend to anyone from a big city who wants a change of scenery.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I attribute everything I do to my mother. In addition to unconditional love and support, she gave me believe in myself and is the reason I have been able to become the person I am today.
