Meet Tatiana Rulin | Family & Motherhood Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tatiana Rulin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tatiana, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Honestly, I don’t think there’s such a thing as a perfect “work-life balance.” That phrase always felt like a myth to me—like there’s some magical formula where everything stays perfectly even all the time. That’s just not how life works, especially as a mom and a business owner.
Over the years, my perspective has definitely shifted. When I first started my photography business, I tried to do it all—be the present mom, the responsive photographer, the marketing expert, the email ninja. Spoiler alert: I was burned out fast. Now, I think of balance more like a rhythm. Some seasons require more from me professionally—like fall, when family sessions are in full swing—and other seasons give me more breathing room to focus on family, rest, and creative play.
Instead of chasing “balance,” I’ve learned to set better boundaries and to give myself permission to be fully present in whatever space I’m in—whether I’m editing or making pancakes with my kids on a Sunday morning. To me, that’s the real win. It’s not about dividing my time perfectly—it’s about intentionally choosing how I spend it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a lifestyle maternity, newborn, and family photographer based in Santa Clarita. I’m all about capturing the real, joyful, sometimes chaotic beauty of motherhood and family life. My style is light and airy, timeless, and full of heart.
What sets me apart is how much I care about the in-between moments—the way your baby fits perfectly in your arms, the sweet chaos of toddlers, the real-life magic that happens when you just let it be. I want my families to feel relaxed, seen, and celebrated just as they are.
I didn’t start this journey with all the answers, and honestly—I’m still learning. There have been plenty of challenges and growing pains, but I’ve learned to give myself grace. Every season teaches me something new, and I’ve built a brand I’m proud of because it’s rooted in connection, honesty, and heart.
At the end of the day, this work is about more than just photos—it’s about preserving the love, connection, and legacy of your family in a way that feels natural and meaningful.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend came to town, we’d absolutely make the most of every day—and mix in plenty of caffeine, sunshine, and cute photo ops (because, duh).
We’d kick off the week with coffee at Makenna Koffee in Santa Clarita, then head to Malibu for a beach day at Zuma—it’s my favorite spot for a peaceful ocean vibe without the chaos. After that, we’d swing by Malibu Farm on the pier for lunch and a glass of rosé (or two).
Midweek, I’d keep it chill with a sunrise hike at Towsley Canyon or Placerita Canyon, followed by a stop at Honu Coffee in Newhall—SO good and super cozy. Then we’d spend the afternoon at The Americana at Brand in Glendale—grab a bite, stroll the shops, soak in the charm. It’s basically a girl’s day dream.
Saturday would start slow and sweet with a stop at the Studio City Farmers Market (fresh flowers and pastries are a must), then we’d head to Joan’s on Third for brunch—because it’s iconic and delicious. After that, we’d either explore The Getty Villa or stroll Abbot Kinney for beachy air and boho shopping.
For dinner, we’d keep it local with a cozy evening at Sidecar Market in Newhall—great food, wine, and just the right amount of buzz and ambiance.
It’s a mix of laid-back local favorites and little luxuries—because when your bestie visits, you pull out all the stops.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh, I love this question because the truth is, none of us get to where we are on our own—and I’ve been lucky to have some truly amazing people in my corner.
First and foremost, my husband deserves the biggest shout-out. He’s the one who’s been pushing me from day one to go after my dreams—even when I was scared out of my mind. I’ll never forget how hesitant I was to invest in my first photography course. It felt like such a big risk, and I was full of self-doubt. But he believed in me before I believed in myself, and if it weren’t for his encouragement, I probably never would’ve taken that leap. He’s my rock, my biggest cheerleader, and honestly, I wouldn’t be where I am without him.
Next up is Nicole Hill from Horizon Found. Nicole’s course was that very first step I took, and it completely changed the trajectory of my life. She didn’t just teach me how to use my camera—she helped me own the idea that I could turn my passion into a business. Her impact runs deep, and I’ll always be grateful for that foundation she helped me build.
And then there’s Desiree Keoshian and April Konzen—two powerhouse photographers who created a local Focus group that became such a pivotal part of my journey. That group brought me into a circle of supportive, like-minded creatives who understand the ups and downs of this work. Desiree and April have always been so generous with their knowledge, encouragement, and time. I’ve leaned on them more times than I can count, and through their friendship, I’ve built relationships that continue to inspire and uplift me.
So yes—my journey has been shaped by some incredible humans who’ve believed in me, challenged me, and helped me grow. And I’m beyond grateful for every single one of them.
