We had the good fortune of connecting with Tauri/Rosie Alonso and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tauri/Rosie, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
The Los Angeles Poet Society is a group of BIPOC folks centered in the IE, LA, and Bay Area that organize open mics, community writing workshops, and publish local and upcoming authors and artists in our newly launched literary press, Los Angeles Poet Society Press. Our open mics are here to inspire folks to share their words and art while networking and cultivating relationships with other creatives. We love to offer free writing workshops in spaces like libraries and parks because those spaces are typically accessible. I started my literary journal, Acid Verse, to publish queer, two-spirit, and BIPOC voices, who often feel a lack of connection in a mostly white/cis literary circle.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Acid Verse Literary Journal lunched in 2020, and have proudly published two issues. This year we are working on the third volume. I have been the only one working on the project as the chief editor, but for this third issue I decided to have support from my co-editor, Sol Con Carne, who is an amazing poet. I wanted to give someone else the opportunity to work in editing and publishing because I know it is a wonderful way to develop friendships with fellow writers, editors, and artists. I also thought it would be good for me to get another folk’s perspective and collaborate visions we have for the journal.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In LA I would hit up any event by the Los Angeles Poet Society! Our last event had drag and poetry in the same space. In the IE, Lake Perris is such a beautiful pace. I’ve watch the full moon rise behind a mountain of snow, while the sky turned purple. It’s magical. In the Bay Area, I would go outside the city and drive to Bodega Bay for the best sunset. But in San Francisco, I’d hit up local bookstore, Medicine for Nightmares. The San Jose Art Walk is a fun place to be as well!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout the folks in LA, Long Beach, and now SF that consistently show up to our poetry readings! The community always shows up for one another.
