We had the good fortune of connecting with Tee Two Times and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tee Two Times, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from Detroit. The Westside to be exact! The saying “Detroit Hustles Harder” is one of the truest things ever written. It’s what I’ve seen, it’s how I was raised and it’s what I know. I can’t say I’ve ever been satisfied doing just one thing. Even as a child, my mom had me involved in multiple activities year-round. I was in everything from my church’s mentoring program to Ice Skating to Dance to Cheer. I was on the chess team, a majorette in the marching band and I learned to play several instruments including the harp, violin, piano, flute and trombone. To be honest, I think she kept me busy because she was busy too. She led several organizations and kept multiple jobs in addition to helping coordinate things with our family and being an “activity” parent.
My mom was my greatest inspiration during her and is even more so after losing her to heart disease in 2018. She always encouraged me to try new things and the Detroit Hustle made sure I was good at them. At the moment not only am I pursuing my career in radio but I’m also a full-time professional DJ, business owner, content creator and podcaster. There’s an urgency to be great that is deeply ingrained in the people from my city. The “by any means necessary” attitude goes back to the days of Malcolm X.
It’s that swagger, that demeanor, that grit that keeps me going in everything I do but the secret sauce has been my faith in God. My mom taught me that my faith has to be at the center of my life. It surely was at the center of hers. That concept was probably lost on me as a child but these days it makes the most sense. I know that I couldn’t do any of this with God.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a professional busybody. I do so much and I love it all! I’m a DJ, Radio personality, I own a Vegan baked goods company (Not Your Auntie’s), I have an online cooking show (Time Two EET!) and I recently started a podcast with my friend called “No Mama, No Manual”. What sets me apart in all that I do is that all my work comes from a genuine place within me. I have always enjoyed Radio and I don’t think there could ever be too much relatable, optimistic, fun content in the world so i’m happy to be filling the space. For work I get to combine my passions and it looks like making parties happen as a DJ/Host, creating/cooking vegan dishes, and sharing how much my mom’s life and death have impacted me. I love being able to work with people who inspire me and having the opportunity to inspire others via YouTube and Instagram.
Getting to this point hasn’t been easy at all. The instability of entrepreneurship can be discouraging and so can being misunderstood by people who love me. It made zero sense to my family that I earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at Howard University only to decide to pursue media & entertainment. It was simple to me, though. After graduating from college I realized that I was happier at my radio station internship than at my pharmacy job so I decided to let my plan of becoming a pharmacist go. My family has kept the “I told you so’s to a minimum” when I hit rough patches but belief that I am walking in my purpose has kept me going. God has been confirming so much for me on this journey. The greatest key to overcoming my challenges has been reminding myself that I’m not chasing money or fame but impact.
My goal is to change lives by encouraging people to connect with each other be it through finding the fun, singing the songs, sharing the grief or eating some delicious, healthy food.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love LA! Mostly because the city is lightyears ahead of most others when it comes to vegan food. If anyone is PlantBased and visiting you should find the Vegan AF food truck. It’s owned by a young, Black woman named Chanel and the food is amaze balls! And Santa Monica Pier is a must-go just to say you did it.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout is dedicated to my Godparents, Ermelda & Larry Polk. I’m so blessed my mom chose them as the people to love and guide me through life in her absence. They’ve played a huge role in my life from day 1. But the past 5 years have been nothing less than life changing and I am thankful that they’ve been with me every step of the way. #DoItForLoretta
