Meet Teryl Ciarlo | Landscape Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Teryl Ciarlo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Teryl, what inspires you?
I would say I am always inspired by nature and I am inspired by other gardeners or landscape designers that I can learn from. It is always great to keep learning.
Weirdly I am inspired when I get up in the morning and I see new tomatoes on the vine or new roses that bloomed over night. I like to walk around in the morning with a cup of coffee and check out the garden and then again in the evening maybe with a glass of wine and the garden hose and take care of all of my little friends.
I feel lucky that I appreciate the idea of stopping to smell the roses.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets Teryl Designs apart is attention to details. Its all about the details! It does not matter if you have a small garden patio or a multi acre property it all needs to be special. In LA its all about the California dream of living outside most of the year. I try to create stylish outdoor rooms that my clients get excited about which in turn makes me excited about my job. I get a lot of joy out of people saying to me,” I never spent time in my yard and now we are outside all of the time.”
One of the biggest challenges for me is clients not understanding the visual ideas so I provide visual inspiration for them mostly with photos of other projects or magazines. Something as simple as a stylish umbrella can change the energy of a patio.
I don’t just install the plants I also install lighting, lanterns, garden benches, play areas, raised vegetable boxes..etc. The idea is to make it family oriented and inviting.
I am the ultimate garden girl and want to help you have the garden of your dreams!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would first take my friend to the Beverly Canon Gardens which is a public open space with beautiful colonnaded walkways and little cafes. You can dine or sip cocktails and kids can run and play soccer on the grass. Or you could grab food to go from Whole Foods and picnic on the grass.
Then I would head north to Summerland and stop at the charming Field and Fort for a yummy meal with beautiful food and homemade pastries topped with edible flowers. The outdoor patios are lovely summer or winter. They have a beautiful unusual home store for shopping. Then you can stroll on Lille Avenue which is the main drag and find lots of little shops with bespoke goods, antiques and home and garden gifts.
Next stop would be Rosewood Miramar Beach Hotel which is a stunning hotel on the beach with gorgeous style. Great place for people watching and the bar overlooks the ocean with beautiful umbrellas and a “ship deck” vibe.
Then I would take my friend to Montecito to the upper and lower villages which is a fun Hampton style area filled with restaurants, farmers markets, and very pretty antique stores and vintage jewelry.
The next day we would head back home to my area and we would go to The Brentwood Country Mart which is a cool series of old barns that have been redone and hit the Farm Shop which is a powerhouse breakfast and lunch spot. I have seen lots of actors, writers and producers having meetings. Interesting people watching for sure. Then a walk around the mart which was built in about 1948 filled with curated brands, flower shops, stationary stores and services.
Then back home in my garden for an afternoon cocktail and picking tomatoes and herbs from the garden for dinner.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Grandmother! “Thank you Grams for introducing me to the joy of gardening. Helping you as a small child in the garden taught me how special it is to have a small piece of land to watch over”
