We had the good fortune of connecting with Timur Sadyq and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Timur, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
Being a hairstylist, a freelancer it is a hard work, dedication. A lot of people see final results on the pictures and be like “oh wow, so cool. So beautiful.” Behind that it is years of experience and takign time to craft it. Some kids go to beauty school thinking it is going to be so easy. Even after beauty school it is a whole new life. I had to be patient to be where i am right now. And of course I always dream and go for it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I do hair, I love hair. I am learning hair everyday b/c everyone’s hair is different but kinda the same. I would say that – b/c I love what I i took every challenge as an amazing opportunity to be better. I always want to be batter. What I am learning along the way in this industry I cannot stop where I am right now. Everyday there’s a new product comes up on the market. I do my research, I talk to my clients and other hair professionals. Another lesson I learned that hairdressers/stylist must keep secrets and never spill the tea about their clients. Its like thearpist and a patient secret. Ahaha.

What brought me to where I am, as I said before – dedication, patience and DREAM BIG!

What I am exited about is a new journey I am starting this year. Tsss, it a lil secret for now.
What I am proud of – when I fled Russia, alone, and stayed here in the most extreme and expensive but best city in the world – NYC. I stayed true to myself and my craft. I said – regardless of anything I wall always be doing and working with hair! So with no paper work, 7 years ago I got my first job at the salon, I was picking up low budget gigs to survive and to live in this city. With my good friend Nick Gaga(the premier Lady Gaga impersonator in the US) I was styling her wigs for the shows and learned from the scratch how to make wigs, how to color and style. And it turned into a new passion and business for me. Now I work for myself with my clients in Soho, and as a session hairstylist for fashion shoots in NYC and LA. And working on something new!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh, a good one. If someone comes visit me, I say- do you want to do a boring touristy stuff with me or you want to feel like you local and live here? I usually give them some tips for touristy stuff so they spend few days on their own to see things like Times Square, Emire state building etc. And then the rest of the week I introduce to all of my friends, we dress up we go to the rave party at the Basment in queens/Brooklyn, a drag performances in Hells Kitchen by Nick Gaga and the Assassins, we go for dinners at a local nice restaurants. cocktail/ party bars/clubs such as Casablanca, baby grand, Le bain, now there’n a new place called Bar Nena on Carmine str (really loved it) or Brick Wine bar on Clinton str. And many more.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
18 years ago, in 2006 I was in my home town Ufa (south East of Russia). During the spring break at the university I met a hairstylist who cut my hair for the first time and i asked if she needs an assistant. Her name was Anastasia. She tought me color while i was an apprentice at this fancy salon. . It happend that I was in a relationships with Vladimir, he was an Art Director of the that salon and he tought me how to feel hair and how to shape it. Then it was hair brand Redken NYC we all were working with back there and I started taking haircolor/cutying clasess it was a pivot point of my career. I fell in love with the brand. I traveled to America for educational program with Redken and met a lot of amazing hair educators and friends who tought me so much. I would say these 2 people (Anastasia and Vladimir) and a huge influence was a lot of people at Redken.
