Meet Tommy Wu | Music Composer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tommy Wu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tommy, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
The balance between my work and personal life has remained relatively consistent over time. As a composer, my profession lacks the regular time shifts that many other occupations adhere to. I have the flexibility to adjust my schedule when fatigue sets in, allowing me to maintain what I consider to be a well-established work-life balance.
I emphasize the importance of contemplating how work-life balance functions. Each individual possesses their unique blend of work and personal life, tailored to their specific needs. Working in the creative industry amplifies the significance of this balance for me. It is crucial to allocate time away from my creative endeavors when inspiration eludes me, or to take breaks for self-renewal. Consequently, I firmly believe that discovering the optimal point of work-life balance is of utmost importance.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In terms of my career, it hasn’t been a long and convoluted journey. I lacked a solid background in music initially, as my foray into music composition began out of sheer interest during my college years. Self-learning became my path, and I discovered my passion for this art form. This realization prompted me to relocate to Los Angeles to further enrich my knowledge and skills in film scoring.
What distinguishes me from others in the field is my refusal to confine my imagination; I thrive on experimentation. I take pride in my distinctive approach to composing music and find perpetual excitement in discovering new sounds during the creative process.
Undoubtedly, my background has posed challenges, which led me to pursue studies in Los Angeles. The city, being a hub for film-related professionals and home to Hollywood, seemed the ideal place for someone in the industry. As a composer, I am enthusiastic about collaborating with directors, welcoming as many opportunities as possible. My style is eclectic, characterized by a natural aptitude for crafting dark, ambient soundscapes, while remaining versatile across various genres. Additionally, I take pride in my ability to efficiently translate directors’ visions into musical compositions.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In Los Angeles, I would take my friends to Griffith Observatory. The view and Hollywood sign can totally blow their mind. I think Korea town has good restaurants, so I might show them around and eat food there. Also, there are some good galleries and museums, such as Getty center, LACMA etc. I definitely will recommend them to take a look around,
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout to an organization called The Society of Composers & Lyricists. This organization holds several good events which invites fantastic composers to come to share their experience or behind the scene on their works.
