We had the good fortune of connecting with Tomoki Nomura and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tomoki, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
I believe it’s important to persist, but also to regularly reassess your goals and strategies. If you find yourself hitting a wall, it might be a sign that the timing isn’t right or that your approach needs adjustment. Instead of relentlessly pushing against obstacles, consider reevaluating and adapting your strategy. Flexibility and a willingness to rethink your approach can often lead to better outcomes.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m originally from Japan, but my journey has taken me across the globe since I was 13. This peripatetic experience has profoundly influenced my design approach, allowing me to draw on a rich tapestry of cultural insights. Living in different parts of the world has given me a unique perspective and a diverse set of influences that inform my work, enabling me to craft designs that resonate on an international scale.

What sets my art apart is my unwavering commitment to quality and refinement. Each piece is designed to enhance the spaces it inhabits, blending functionality with aesthetic appeal. My work also emphasizes ethical production practices, ensuring that everyone involved in creating my designs receives fair wages and works under humane conditions.

Getting to where I am today professionally wasn’t always easy. The journey was marked by challenges, from navigating different cultural contexts to overcoming industry hurdles. However, each obstacle was an opportunity to grow and refine my approach. I’ve learned that resilience and adaptability are key. Embracing a global perspective has helped me find innovative solutions and maintain a high standard of craftsmanship despite the challenges.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of staying true to your values while remaining open to new ideas. Balancing creativity with ethical responsibility has been crucial in building a brand that I’m proud of. I want the world to know that my designs are not just about aesthetics—they reflect a deep commitment to quality, ethical practices, and a global perspective.

Ultimately, my goal is to create work that not only stands out but also makes a positive impact. I hope to inspire others to appreciate the beauty of thoughtful design and to consider the broader implications of their creative practices.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
To make the most of your visit to California, I recommend renting a car, as it will be essential for navigating the state effectively.

For a week-long trip, I suggest starting with a day or two in Los Angeles, exploring both Orange County and East LA. Los Angeles is renowned for its diverse culinary scene, with exceptional Vietnamese, Chinese, and Mexican cuisine. East LA and Orange County offer some of the best dining experiences in the area.

Following your time in LA, drive to Sequoia National Park and spend one or two days exploring the hiking trails. Next, head to the Bay Area and do some outdoor activities there as well (hiking, surfing, mountain biking). Finally, enjoy a scenic drive down the Pacific Coast Highway, returning to Los Angeles.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a huge shoutout to some incredible individuals and organizations that have been pivotal in my journey. First and foremost, a massive thank you to my partner, whose unwavering support and positivity have been my anchor through all the highs and lows.

I also owe a great deal of gratitude to ArtCenter College of Design. The knowledge and technical skills I gained there were crucial in shaping my career and pushing me to new heights.

A special shoutout goes to Stephen Kenn, who gave me my first real opportunity in the furniture industry. Your trust and mentorship have made a significant impact on my professional growth.

And, of course, I can’t forget my parents and grandmother. Their financial support during my academic career was vital, and their belief in my potential has been a constant source of motivation.

Thank you all for being such an important part of my story. Your support has made all the difference.
