We had the good fortune of connecting with Tony Appello and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tony, what do you want your legacy to be?
As the lead singer of the band Six Gun Sal, I want people to remember that I created music that people could relate to. Our band is trying to create something that will last decades from now, that will be meaningful to our fans whether they’re 20 years old or 70, something that makes them hit repeat on a song because it makes them feel a certain way or remember a moment in time. Our music is written about them, for them. For each person’s unique experience. So when veterans hear our music, they feel proud to have served our country. When first responders hear a song, they know we appreciate them. When everyday people hear a song that makes them think about love and loss and happiness and sadness, they hold onto a feeling that that lasts long after the song comes to an end.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We’re an original musical act who plays rock music with southern influences. I’m proud that with even all the pitfalls and setbacks we’ve experienced over the years, we’ve never stopped! We continue toward our dream knowing all it may never come to pass but we’re going to keep playing kickass music until we’re dragged from the stage.

It hasn’t been easy and overcoming challenges from band members quitting to strong personalities coming out at rehearsal to losing thousands of dollars on a show because of scheduling screw ups and sometimes playing at a venue with only a few people, this industry can truly make you or completely break you!

I even started writing a book titled, “So You want To Be A RockStar” that offers advice to guide people through the pitfalls, and to not make the same mistakes that I made along the way! Here’s a quote from the book…

“So, let me tell you about this industry. The music industry, from an artist’s point of view, can be one of the best things you’ll ever experience, but it can also be one of the most difficult and heartbreaking endeavors you will ever take on, if you make the mistakes I have.

I am going to give you a zero-bullshit approach on how to make your dream of being a rockstar a reality. I am speaking to you the way I would to someone in person. You’re going to experience foul language, so if that bothers you, don’t buy this book.

I am all about being 100% real when I talk or give advice to anyone on whatever subject they are asking about.

I’ve seen the best and the worst of this business, and I will help you try to avoid the pitfalls and the mistakes that I made in chasing this dream.”

What do I want the world to know about our brand and story…

We remain consistent, we remain disciplined, and we stay focused on what we call the Mission. And what I would want people to know about our story is to always know and remember that no matter how dark it gets, no matter how difficult it becomes, never give up! Never let anyone else talk you out of doing something you believe in your heart you can accomplish. There are very few people who have made it to the very top. There are massive numbers of those who even had more talent that gave up on themselves and our story, our mission, our hope is that those of you that follow us, that listen to our music, that love us, will keep that same relentless drive inside of you! To accomplish anything and everything that’s important to you. Failure is a necessary evil in order to find true success, never forget that!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The weekend would start with a trip down the Sunset strip to see a show at the world-famous Whiskey a Go Go, and to check out the scene at The Viper Room and the Rainbow Bar & Grill.

Of course, Los Angeles has the best beaches in the world, the most beautiful sunsets, and the most drastic landscape changes all within a two-hours’ drive so we’d have to spend a day at the beach, a few hours in the high desert, and head to the mountains. I guess that would be a really long day! But stopping for street tacos along the way would make it worth it.

The weekend would end with a great steak. If I’m not grilling them myself outside on an open flame, then we’re probably eating at Larsens Steak House. Texas says they got the best BBQ, well I say hold my beer! I can throw down on that BBQ and make a mean steak!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Major shout outs to my partners in crime, my life-long friend and band cofounder Dusty Lang who plays rhythm guitar, and our other band cofounder and drummer Joey Durant. Another shout out to Gwendolyn Casella, our badass backup singer who is the glue that keeps us all together. And of course, Six Gun Sal wouldn’t be possible without the incredible talent and contributions of both current and former band members, and all of the family, friends, and fans who have supported us along the way.
