We had the good fortune of connecting with Topaz Faerie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi topaz faerie, what do you attribute your success to?
my authenticity. i genuinely have no desire to be like anyone else. i automatically lose respect for artists who proclaim who they want to be like. like when people say ‘i wanna be as big as beyonce’ or i’m trynna be like pharrell’ like NO. i wanna be topaz faerie.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
i started releasing music as topaz faerie in 2018. my first EP is called ‘we should gooo’. shortly after that i released ‘in the pits’ that same year. about 3 months ago i co-produced and co-wrote an album called ‘subculture’. that album took about 4ish years to make, and i’m really proud the work we created. one song i would like to highlight from my latest album is called ‘bombs in the sky’, as i talk about the current state of affairs and how i see it.

i’ve been involved in music since i was about 7 years old, and i decided to take it seriously as a career choice when i was 12 years old. 12 was also the age when i picked the bass guitar. i’ve always had a vision of where my career would take me, and i’m still actively working towards that. i started gigging around LA when i was 16. i had to sneak in to bars/clubs to perform for awhile. i’ve always written songs, but i didn’t muster up the courage to release anything until 2018 with my first record.

to be honest, every day is a challenge for me continue. i’ve had months long depressive episodes, months long writers block, every day i think about making the switch to psychiatry and quiting music altogether. its hard, and for awhile, i lost my passion to create because of everything i just mentioned. but something or someone reels me back in with some inspiration and ambition to continue. so here i am.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
if there was a heat wave. we’d go to the beach. i’m a beach girl, so we’d hit the beach 5 of 7 days most likely. we can rollerskate on the boardwalk, and take a dip to cool off. maybe do a mini roadtrip to san diego and go to the japanese botanical garden, then get fish tacos at the beach. i like to eat, so we’d also be on a food tour all over LA county.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
my friends that have encouraged me to keep going even when i wanted to disappear from the music world and raise farm animals.
