We had the good fortune of connecting with Tosin Toromade and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tosin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The inspiration behind starting my own business stemmed from a desire to create something meaningful beyond the traditional 9-5 work structure. As a visual artist, I have the opportunity to leverage my talents to provide value for others seeking to express themselves within the creative industry. Art offers me the freedom that many aspire to, allowing me to contribute to a space where creativity and self-expression thrive.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As an artist, my work explores the profound connection between art and mental health, examining how creativity can be a powerful tool for healing, understanding, and self-expression. Through my artistic practice, I seek to capture the intricate complexities of the human psyche, utilizing a variety of mediums to convey the subtle layers of emotion, memory, and the subconscious. Each piece I create is part of an ongoing dialogue between the inner and outer worlds, where personal experience intersects with universal themes. My art often features abstract elements, symbolic imagery, and richly layered textures, built on a foundation of traditional impressionistic realism, inviting viewers to engage deeply and interpret the visual narrative through their own experiences. My aim is to inspire, impact, and transform through my art.

The path hasn’t always been easy. Like many, I’ve faced challenges in my career, including a three-year hiatus due to industry gatekeeping and discouragement. During this time, I explored other creative passions such as photography, filmmaking, and songwriting. This journey taught me that art is a marathon—it requires patience, resilience, and the willingness to innovate. Breaks are sometimes necessary, and continuous learning is as vital as the work itself.

The Toromade brand is on a mission to make an impact and drive transformation, using art as the central element. As I continue to evolve my craft, this mission remains steadfast.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
hahahaha…….. I’d begin by introducing them to my fantastic collection of jazz music and inviting them to enjoy the serenity of my garden—I’m quite the homebody. While I’m not typically an outdoor enthusiast, I’d certainly take them to some of the best local restaurants to experience the finest dishes our area has to offer. Afterward, we could explore parts of the ancient city of Ibadan, which has a wealth of history and sights to see.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shoutout to the many people who have played a significant role in my journey as an artist. First and foremost, I want to thank my family—especially my parents—for their unwavering support. At a time when many parents were encouraging their children to pursue more traditional careers such as medicine, law, or engineering, they recognized the importance of supporting my passion for art. I also owe a great deal to my art teachers in high school, who nurtured my talent and guided my development. Throughout my life, I have been fortunate to have the support of individuals who believed in my abilities and helped me grow. The list is long, and each name carries a meaningful story of encouragement and inspiration.
