We had the good fortune of connecting with Trace Devai and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Trace, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued a creative and artistic career for various reasons- but mainly because I fell in love with Fred Astaire. I started my creative career as a tap dancer at the age of 9 years old and was immediately thrust into a scholarship program at Dupree Dance Academy in Los Angeles. I attended Beverly Hills high school and became best friends with Lenny Kravitz and we formed a band called WAVE together. After high school, I met director Kenny Ortega and through his network, I landed a part in Alice Cooper’s band singing background vocals on two world tours. From then on, I knew my destiny was to be a singer and creative force in entertainment. Being blessed with talents, I have the capacity to bring joy to a lot of people.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always had a very unique and androgynous look which makes me stand out. I was once fired by director Paul Hunter from a Whitney Houston music video for” pulling too much focus” in the middle of New York City street scene amongst 200 people. I’m a multi-dimensional artist that can sing, write, dance, and direct plays. I directed the stage play The Ghosts of Ma Barker, which can be viewed on YouTube. I call myself a melody machine. I’ve written hundreds of songs and constantly walk with a groove all my own. My music in ROKTOY is dubbed groovy sexy hard rock. I played Michael Jackson in a tribute band for 3 years so entertaining is my main thing. I lost my 23 year old wife in a tragic car accident in 2010, since then I have learned not to sweat the little stuff and appreciate the grace and beauty where I find it. My lyrics and my stories have one thing in common, my personal criteria… stories that have to be told.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite street in Los Angeles in Sunset Strip. I love taking friends to The Whisky a Go Go, The Rainbow, and Viper Room because they all have great rock and roll energy that made the Sunset strip famous. The Chateau Marmont is the number one hotel I would recommend to a friend or newbie in the city. In addition, I would recommend Spago and La Boheme to dine, for their beautiful atmosphere and delicious food.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My success as an artist is attributed to my 95 year old uncle Michael Tyndal and my father, Sy Marsh. Since I was a little boy, my uncle has shown his unwavering support and encouragement on every level to my journey as an artist. My father was a William Morris’ super agent, credited for bringing Elvis Presley to Hollywood. He always encouraged my talent and told me “talent always outs,” empowering me to never give up on my goals and dreams.
