We had the good fortune of connecting with Treeh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Treeh, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is something we naturally want to avoid. We want the soft cushy life. With everything laid out nice and neat awaiting our arrival. But I learned that comfortability does not bode well for progression and success. And I wanted to hit it big, and make major moves for my family and the community. I couldn’t play it safe if I was was going to really make an impact. I had to take on the risk of people’s scrutiny and judgement while I poured myself into the music. The risk of releasing something into the world eventually got easier when I realized the reward was simple. If I was able to reach that one person my lyric or melody was meant for, then it was worth it. I’ve grown to embrace the risks that comes with being myself and speaking my truth, because the reward is rocking out with the ones that are rocking with me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The art is music, Nothing makes sense with out it. What I think sets me apart from others is the fact that I would be perfectly content with creating music that only my ears would ever hear. I make music for myself and to release all of the complicated thoughts and emotions that swirl around in my head. What makes me proud and excited is the fact that I can even create these melodies and lyrics that people seem to gravitate toward. I am extremely thankful for my gifts and the ability to create the music that i do. I would have to attribute my ear and much of my success to my father (Father Henry), as he exposed me to everything from Thelonious Monk, to Joao Bosco. He taught me the concept of singing in key, and knowing the difference between singing lead and background accompaniment. And he would probably take credit for my ability to “Hear a Hit” when I hear a song for the first time. Because he was a music major the standard he set for music execution was really high, which as a young girl, was really intimidating, and somewhat stifled my ability to think outside of the box. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. As I grew into my own sound and started to work with various other producers I learned that trying to do what everyone else was doing isn’t the vibe that I wanted to create for myself. I had to just be Treeh. And I learned that she is versatile, emotional, soulful, playful, and limitless.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
