We had the good fortune of connecting with Trevon Sailor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Trevon, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk is the common denominator in terms of achieving success. I have yet to achieve my personal goals without taking risks, nor have I met a successful person that has not taken risks to get where they are at. I wholeheartedly believe that everything is constantly in motion, thus you are either moving forward or backwards. Many people do not realize that risks are innate and are apart of your daily life whether you acknowledge them or not. I choose to be proactive in my risk taking and by doing so, I stack the odds in my favor.
For example, you can choose the risk of possible physical injury by working out, however by choosing not to workout you risk being prone to illness and other health concerns. By proactively taking risks, I allow my self to properly prepare for the upcoming challenges while simultaneously minimizing may chances of being blindsided.
Its my experience as well as the experience of others (books I’ve read or conversations I’ve had) that taking calculated risks turns out to be safer than playing it safe initially. I choose not to play it safe and have been rewarded greatly throughout my life.
I took a great risk when I joined the US Army at the age of 17. Thankfully my risk paid off and paved a foundation for me to build upon. My decision to leave a “secured” career in law enforcement to pursue my dreams of building a successful coffee brand was a great risk. I am still on this journey, but the foreseeable reward greatly outweighs the risk of “job security” for me.
Life is a risk itself and choosing not to take calculated chances is a risk I’m not willing to take. I am a risk taker and goal oriented person. This is something I always preach about and definitely am walking what I am talking, always have and always will.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Sailor’s Brew Coffee is more than a coffee company. We blend quality single origin coffees with a motivated lifestyle that focuses on setting goals and going after them. I am both proud and excited to be able to provide quality coffee to customers. I can honestly say we have been able to convert many coffee drinkers to enjoying coffee black. Coffee has to be enjoyable without any additives in order to be considered “quality”. I look forward to continuing to provide quality coffee to existing and future customers.
I have been seriously studying business for several years. This includes topics covering branding, marketing, sales, product development, accounting, etc. Studying is not hard, but it requires determination and consistency. The path of self education includes trial and error, which is not for the faint or weakhearted. This path, and the path of conducting business in general, requires having a strong mindset and faith in your purpose. I applied this and continue to apply this as I increase my knowledge on a daily.
During my journey in obtaining business knowledge, I have learned to thoroughly plan out my moves before taking action. This also includes having someone double check my work, wether it was a product design, website content, etc. I have also learned that the pursuit of knowledge is endless and must be balanced with adequate follow-through and work ethic.
I want the world to know that Sailor’s Brew Coffee is a brand for coffee lovers and the “go-getters” in life. If you enjoy coffee and enjoy pursuing your goals,, we are the brand for you. Life is a voyage that we all must traverse. By embracing the voyage, the sunny days and storms, and maintaining your focus your destination (goal), you have a better chance of reaching your destination. This also makes the overall process more enjoyable. This is what our brand stands for and believes in.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Due to having a busy and sometimes spontaneous weekly schedule, I would have a loose itinerary. With that being said, I would work in the following activities:
Going to the beach would be a must if weather permitted it. I like spending time at the beach, even on overcast days. It’s always a peaceful setting and allows me to deeply relax and enjoy the moment. I like the beaches around Malibu, however I have some other favorites that I keep to myself.
I’m a big fan of Mexican food, thus grabbing a bite or bites to each from “La Estrella” in Pasadena is a must. I would also mix in a bbq day or two at my house. I like to grill/cook on occasion.
I am an art enthusiast. I like visiting different galleries and museums. This would also be added to the “to-do list” if time permitted.
Aside from this, I’ve pretty laid back, especially given the pandemic atmosphere. Playing dominoes and shooting pool at are also favorite pastimes of mine. Surrounding myself with family and friends in relaxing settings is always good.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My immediate family and friends have definitely supported my success. Wether that be through words of encouragement, patronizing my business, marketing, etc., all has added to my success and continues to do so. I am an avid reader and philosopher of life. There’s a book (audio book also) called the “The Strangest Secret”, by Earl Nightingale. He builds upon Napoleon Hill’s philosophy as well as others. I recommend checking it out for yourself.
