We had the good fortune of connecting with Trevor Stanislaus and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Trevor, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk are very significant to me in my life. There are times people will tell you of risk, or attempt to convince you to go the non risky route in certain situations. But often, they over look the importance of risk taking and what taking risk does for deeper understandings of life. I can take anyones advice. I can listen to my piers, parents, siblings and avoid things that they have experienced and lived through that may have had negative or unfavorable outcomes. But to truly understand is what becomes the missing piece of my conscience and sub conscience when I decide to only listen and experience through others instead of experience through myself. The best teachers are the ones that have experienced what they are teaching. Taking risk -wether you fail or succeed- gives you more than the ending result of the risk. It grants you true insight. You now not only have knowledge on the subject or circumstance, but you now FEEL and truly understand the experience and why or why not to avoid or move forward. It’s a deeper knowledge that takes place in you being.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My Art stems from a pure love of movement. Movement is such a pure language. Wether in combat or in dance. Or in the mind, spirit, or nature. Movement occurs everywhere. Non Movement is also apart of movement. It’s a pure and simple existence. Expression is it’s state of being. Within dance I can express myself within the music, my body, heart, and mind. The constant flow of movement fluctuates and creates more avenues of expression to occur. My movement is naturally experimental. With Martial arts and Dance. My mind body and heart like to play with the tools of life, discovering deeper significance to people, places, things and actions. The two (Martial Arts and Movement art) is my Yin & Yang. The are very similar in a simple way but different in intentions and more complex consequences. But both helps in balancing the other. When I Fight, there is a reflection of my Movement Art in actions and essence. When I Dance, there is a reflection of my Martial Arts in my actions and essence. This has given me endless realms within my overall movement to explore and experiment with. Often times in both my martial arts community and dance community, I’m often referred to as “weird, unconventional, different, unusual, unorthodox, odd and strange” ect. These statements in my early stages of learning used to have a more negative meaning to them. But as time went on, as I continued to learn, sharpen, understand, and build the ability to express clearer in both realms while still honoring my nature, these words began to become positive and personified my difference. The people that have been there from the beginning have witnessed this and slowly I started seeing glimpses of inspiration to be different, odd and strange within others in both realms. To me, it makes my heart warm.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There’s many beautiful beaches and vast lands of nature in South Florida. It’s something that’s hard to ignore once you start looking. The sunsets are beautiful. A week may feel too short. As far as food, the options are endless. It’s always best to find the hole in the wall spots with hood authentic food gearing towards their culture. But there’s so many, it’s hard to be specific. I myself (as a Jamaican) absolutely love the Jamaican food in ft Lauderdale and Miami locations.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people that have influenced me to be who I am on a deep level. First starting with my parents. They raised me in a unique way allowing me room and space to be able to think for my self in early stages of my life. Obviously being a child mistakes are inevitable. Every household handles these circumstances differently. My parents though always gave me room to perceive for myself, instead of force their beliefs and customs upon me. I also believe they did this without realizing they were doing this, because they were learning about life as well. Then I must also say my closest friends, who know who they are, massively helped me fully understand that I’m not alone in the vast and confusing life. Sharing ideals, wisdom, and shenanigans. Helping in build some of the most authentic experiences of being I’ve lived through time and time again. We’ve built bonds among us that can never be broken, regardless of differing perspectives. My Senseis within Martial arts and Dance have have also been a some what of parental figures while still being able to be called my Brothers/ Sisters. Specific Mentions:
House Of Drums/ Floor Trouble/ Team Crave Jiu Jitsu/ HardKnox 305/ Florida Dance community/ My old friends from cypress lake high school.
